2025 is two-thirds gone, but already marks a period of profound change for the #driver #monitoring #systems market. Cipia's #automotive #DMS assets were sold to HARMAN International in June, while emotion3D was acquired by indie.inc early August. Now news has broken that Anand Srivatsa is to step down as #CEO at Tobii. This comes three months after the CFO left and just 18 months after the Tobii acquisition of #DTSAutosense. The exact reasons for change in the Tobii C-suite in 2025 are unclear, but alongside Cipia and emotion3D, one conclusion stands out: The funding window for DMS algorithm developers has closed and the #leaders and #laggards in the sector are now clearly visible. Investors no longer take PR promises; they want delivery, cash profits and a ROI. The news flood is related to timing in the European DMS market. Mandatory distracted driver warning #ADDW for #GSR compliance equates to an incoming 100 percent fitment for DMS in light vehicles sold in Europe. Meanwhile the Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks 2026 test protocols force OEMs to shun cheap and poorly performing DMS for more sophisticated systems which will clearly score above the rising minimum threshold for a 5-star rating. The combination of these two factors both accelerates uptake of DMS in Europe over the next twelve months, and directs OEMs to only a handful of automotive DMS algorithm developers (Tier 2 suppliers) with a suitable feature set and advanced technology roadmap that meets the necessary performance requirements. Starting January, OEMs simply cannot risk losing the coveted 5-star NCAP rating just to save a couple bucks per vehicle, meaning DMS suppliers with an advanced #technology roadmap and proven delivery competency will take the vast majority of the market. For everyone else, the music has stopped. There is a high likelihood Tobii will fall into the arms of an acquirer before the end of the year, but the real fireworks will come when focus turns instead to the independent Tier 2 leaders: Two DMS suppliers; two $B SoC vendors; one $T SoC vendor. Exciting. To understand on-going market developments and for OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to know who to partner with, I developed a new research service to identity these leaders and laggards in the European DMS market. For this pilot, a Kia EV3 equipped with a @Dukosi battery cell monitoring system travelled all the way from Korea to Europe — carrying with it not just a battery, but a new way of thinking about transparency and sustainability. Automotive engineers waste +60% of their time. (Not because they are lazy). Let me explain. The problem is that engineers working in legacy companies that serve a highly regulated niche like automotive, space, railway, have stringent documentation obligations. You can’t just change code, update requirements or send a patch to your customers. You are required to „keep track“ of all changes, get the necessary sign offs, „archive“ the audit trails etc. You get it… Per se this is fine, it’s only logical and it’s strictly necessary. Life’s are at stake. BUT What’s not acceptable is forcing your engineers to do this in tooling straight from the 90s. To manually enter the SAME info 3 times. Across excel spreadsheets. Req management tool and Jira user story. It’s redicilous how poorly integrated tooling and data are in those companies. No wonder engineers report being only 20-40% actually working on product features. That’s not your environment fostering innovation and speed. Thankfully there are more and more companies popping up that FINALLY fix this mess. Why use AI + ML → Smarter Path to Net Zero in Automotive Getting to Net Zero isn’t just about targets. We assume some targets for scope 1 &2 & than including scope 3 but never know the path or calculations to achieve it or not - as their are numerous variants - including carbon credits we are earning , no of cars we are producing, EV buses for employees, EV trucks for materials , Recycling ♻️ materials inside cars 🚗 or new technologies for carbon reducing every year we will bring or even afforestation for Tree 🌴 Plantations we planned. Also It’s about our internal manufacturing systems. And in automotive manufacturing — with its energy-heavy paint shops, complex supply chains, and real-time variability — that’s a big challenge. Hence it cannot be equated in Excel sheet & that’s where how AI/ML can step up here: 🔹 Predict emissions at machine or process level 🔹 Optimize HVAC, lighting, and logistics with real-time data 🔹 Align production with renewable energy forecasts 🔹 Model Scope 1/2/3 emissions with better accuracy Example: One EV plant cut 15% emissions in year 1 with predictive ML + IoT + smart scheduling — without slowing output. When people ask me about the bottleneck in bringing automated vehicles onto the road, I respond: It's technology readiness. Not regulation. The European Union has done its homework on uniform regulation for Level 4 vehicles. The General Safety Regulation is the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles in Europe. This defines the legal framework for deploying Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and fully driverless vehicles. The EU has established harmonised type-approval procedures to ensure uniform safety standards across member states. Germany, for example, has been a pioneer in creating national legislation to support autonomous driving. The Autonomous Driving Act and the Ordinance Regulating the Operation of Motor Vehicles with Automated and Autonomous Driving Functions permit fully automated driving on public roads without a safety driver. Type approval requires manufacturers to provide documentation in the following areas: 1. Safety concepts and safety performance monitoring. These refer to ISO 26262 and ISO 21448. 2. A clearly defined operational design domain (ODD). 3. Test procedures, including real-world tests, simulations, HIL and certification tests. 4. Cybersecurity requirements in accordance with UN ECE 155.  AND 5. Data recording rules and incident reporting. Germany paved the way for these regulatory updates with the introduction of the German Autonomous Driving Act. The regulation also addresses ethical aspects. For instance, if there is an unavoidable risk to human life, the automated vehicle must not prioritise one person over another based on personal characteristics. AND The protection of human life outside the fully automated vehicle must not be subordinated to the protection of human life inside the car. Human life must have the highest priority when balancing legally protected interests. Therefore, 'damage to animals or property' must never take precedence over the protection of human life.

Waymo said it plans to launch a robotaxi service next year in Dallas, the latest city to be added to the Alphabet-owned company’s growing commercial footprint that already includes Los Angeles and San Francisco. This time around, Waymo is partnering with Avis Budget Group to manage its fleet of all-electric autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. Avis will handle general depot operations, including charging and maintaining the vehicles. Users will be able to hail a robotaxi through the Waymo app. Waymo has partnered with other companies before, including Uber in Austin and Atlanta and Moove in Phoenix. Avis is the first rental car company to help Waymo manage its fleet.
