We’re excited to see that the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany’s new Hightech Agenda recognizes fusion energy as a national priority, setting a course that puts Germany back where it belongs: at the forefront of building transformative technologies. Here are some of the key highlights: 🇩🇪 A Fusion Action Plan will be presented to the federal government by the end of this year, setting the course for the first commercial fusion power plant in Germany. 🇩🇪 A Fusion Energy Research and Innovation Roadmap (FIRE) will follow by the end of next year, mapping the core technologies needed. 🇩🇪 New networking hubs for magnetic and laser fusion will enter the concept phase this year, aiming to build or expand research infrastructures and demonstrators. 🇩🇪 New funding initiatives will launch in 2025, from exploratory research to enabling technologies. 🇩🇪 The federal government is positioning itself as a potential first anchor client for fusion. Thanks to leaders like Dorothee Bär, fusion has now moved from research to industrial strategy. Germany is stepping up by investing in energy sovereignty, industrial competitiveness and deep-tech leadership, and fusion as a scalable energy solution is gaining momentum. Four #LMU researchers receive prestigious #DFG funding 🏆 The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation awards funding to four LMU researchers through the renowned Emmy Noether and Heisenberg programs—for projects ranging from mythical water beings to volcanoes and the large-scale structures of the universe: 🌊 Prof. Dr. Mariama Diagne (#DanceResearch) – “MeerMenschen zwischen Mythos, Alltag und Nachleben” (SubMarines between myth, the everyday and afterlife): Emmy Noether research group, over €700,000. She investigates artistic and ritual representations of water beings - from mermaids and Mami Wata to current trends like “mermaiding”and how these challenge notions of gender, identity, and culture. 🌋 Dr. Edgar Zorn (#Geosciences) – Volcano flank deformation and instability driven by the compaction of clastic deposits: Emmy Noether project, funding around €1.5 million. Using satellite data, fieldwork, and models, he studies how volcanoes change after eruptions and how hazards like flank collapses can be better predicted. 📜 Dr. Tilo Renz (#LiteraryStudies) – Narrated knowledge in the Middle Ages: Heisenberg program, funding up to €600,000. He analyzes how medieval texts collected, organized, and presented knowledge - linking literary analysis with historical collecting practices, including digital editions. 🌌 Dr. Julia Stadler (#Astrophysics) – Cosmic Large Scale Structure reflected in the distribution of galaxies: Emmy Noether research group, funding around €1.6 million.
