Along the way, they have used abacuses, slide rules, calculators, computers, and - today - supercomputers, to crunch the increasingly complicated calculations used to understand and predict natural phenomena. In the course of practicality, science begets engineering, and engineering begets innovation. Science, and therefore supercomputing, finds its way into industry around the world, affecting our lives in ways that are simple (cleaner clothes, faster speedboats, and more spin on a seven-iron) and profound (fewer drug interactions, safer cars, and new energy sources). Altogether, industry consumes more than half of all high performance computing usage worldwide. This book tells that story."

International Year of Quantum Science and Technology
Female quantum physicists from the beginnings to today 2025! The project “Quantenphysikerinnen im Fokus” (Female Quantum Physicists in focus) aims to increase the visibility of the contributions of women in the field of quantum science and quantum technology. Well-known and unknown female scientists who have contributed to the success of quantum technologies will be identified. Their fascinating portraits and their research will be presented. This should increase the visibility of female physicists, spark interest in research among schoolchildren and inspire the general public about quantum science. The project is led by the Working Group on Equal Opportunities (AKC) of the German Physical Society (DPG), with kind support of the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation. D-Wave
The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) is pioneering hybrid quantum-classical computing to accelerate breakthroughs in fields like AI, materials science, and cosmology. Forschungszentrum Jülich is home to one of Europe’s most advanced computing research facilities and now, the first high-performance computing center in the world to own a D-Wave annealing quantum computer. Installed at the JSC, the system is being used to explore hybrid quantum-classical computing at scale. Australia’s innovation system is world-class in research inputs—but falters when it comes to commercial outcomes. This is our long-standing "innovation paradox." Drawing on the case of Kaiserslautern, a small German city transformed into a global tech hub through the establishment of Fraunhofer Institutes, this Insight investigates the case for introducing Fraunhofer-style applied research institutes in Australia. In Germany and elsewehere, these institutes occupy the critical middle ground between fundamental research and commercial product development. They bring together governments, universities, and industry in structured public-private partnerships, delivering industrial capability, regional renewal, and sovereign strength. The model seems to work. Kaiserslautern went from rust-belt decline to an unemployment rate of 3%, with over 10,000 future-facing jobs and major international investors like Amazon and John Deere choosing to locate there. https://wix.to/LHm6aRx
