  • How Doodle Improved its Competitive Edge through Continuous Improvement

    Lean Agile Intelligence

In the fast-paced world of tech, standing still is moving backwards. Our journey at Doodle is a testament to this fundamental truth—a narrative of strategic transformation that goes beyond typical agile buzzwords.

In the fast-paced world of tech, standing still is moving backwards. Our journey at Doodle is a testament to this fundamental truth—a narrative of strategic transformation that goes beyond typical agile buzzwords.
It was about something other than implementing another management framework when we first embarked on our continuous improvement initiative. It was about fundamentally reimagining how a 15-year-old company could think and operate like an innovative startup. The challenge? Breaking down silos, creating transparent workflows, and ensuring every line of code connects directly to our broader strategic vision.
Our breakthrough came from an unexpected place: portfolio management. We transformed how our teams conceptualise and execute work by implementing a Kanban system that links individual tasks to company-wide initiatives. It's not just about being busy—it's about being purposeful.
The key to our approach was embracing Kaizen, the philosophy that continuous improvement involves everyone. From our CEO to individual developers, we cultivated a culture where questioning and optimising became second nature. Our CTO's perspective was pivotal: team health isn't just about individual performance but systemic alignment and constant evolution.
The results? More than just incremental improvements. We created a dynamic ecosystem where transparency, strategic alignment, and rapid adaptation became our competitive advantage. Every user story now tells a part of our larger organisational narrative.
This isn't a prescriptive roadmap for fellow tech leaders—it's an invitation to reimagine organisational agility. Our journey proves that with the right mindset, continuous improvement is more than a strategy. It's a way of organisational life.
    Stay curious. Stay adaptable.

Under the guidance of Agile Coach and Trainer Tim Yevgrashyn, Doodle transitioned to a “no estimates” approach, implementing probabilistic forecasting with the help of Nave’s analytics suite. This shift enabled teams to make data-driven decisions, focus on quality, and foster a more relaxed work environment. Within six months, Doodle experienced significant improvements, including a reduction in cycle time and increased trust in the data-driven approach. This transformation underscores the effectiveness of adopting Agile methodologies and advanced analytics to drive organizational change and deliver measurable business outcomes.

In 2013, Kantar Retail, a leading insight, technology, and consultancy firm within the WPP Group, embarked on developing a new Virtual Reality (VR) solution for the retail and consumer goods industry. Despite previous attempts at Agile practices, the company faced challenges in scaling these methods effectively. To address this, Kantar Retail adopted the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®), aiming to enhance innovation while maintaining their dynamic culture.

The implementation of SAFe led to significant improvements:
    • Delivery Efficiency: Major release cycles were reduced from six months to two months, and time-to-market decreased from nine months to three months.
    • Responsiveness: The period to address client feedback shortened from three months to one month.
    • Cost Reduction: There was a 27.5% decrease in cost per epic.
    • Talent Management: Attrition rates fell from 41% to 28%, and team productivity increased by 36%-43% due to clearer roles and processes.
    • Talent Acquisition: The company found it easier to attract and retain talent, thanks to increased openness and transparency.

As a consultant during this transformation, I played a pivotal role in guiding Kantar Retail through the adoption of SAFe, ensuring alignment across teams in Ukraine, the UK, and the U.S. This experience underscores my expertise in implementing Agile methodologies to drive organizational change and deliver measurable business outcomes.
