How to Write a Better AI Prompt for Your Job Search
You don’t need a prompt engineering certificate to use AI in your job search. What you need is a starting prompt template, and we’ve got you covered.
In earlier articles, we explored what not to do (the AI Don’ts) and how to leverage AI correctly (the AI Dos). Now, let’s go deeper into the mechanics of writing a prompt that will work.
Most job seekers fall into the trap of asking AI for shortcuts:
- “Rewrite my resume for this job.”
- “Make me a cover letter from my resume.”
The outcome? Generic output that doesn’t stand out.
Once again, I teamed up with Andrey Maltsev, CEO of Flidais.ai, who suggested using a framework similar to what professional prompt engineers apply daily. Flidais’ tested method focuses on six core elements:
- Role – Define who AI should “be” in this role.
- Context – Explain why the task matters and outline the competitive landscape.
- Instructions – Provide clear, step-by-step directions.
- Constraints – Set boundaries to avoid vague or unhelpful advice.
- Output Format – Decide how the answer should be structured (e.g., table, report, bullet list).
- User Input – Add the final spark by supplying your own job description or resume.
This layered approach prevents AI from producing fluff by guiding it to deliver practical, specific insights such as fit scores, skills gaps, and clear, targeted next steps that directly support your job search.
The Flidais platform employs this methodology to evaluate resumes against real job postings—delivering honest assessments and prioritizing strong matches. The lesson is clear: the quality of your AI output depends on the quality of your input.
Treat AI as your specialist consultant and you’ll not only save time, but sharpen your applications and chase only the most promising opportunities – putting yourself firmly in the running for positions where you have a true competitive edge.
