Bill Roth of Chichester is reprising his role as Hip Hop, the Philadelphia 76ers mascot.

Bill Roth of Chichester is coming out of retirement to once again perform as the Philadelphia 76ers rabbit mascot,  Hip Hop, reports Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.

The mascot will return Nov. 8 as part of the Sixers’ 25th anniversary celebration of their 2001 NBA Finals run.

“There’s always been that little piece that’s never left me, because it was such a big part of my life for so many years,” said Roth, who now runs CrossPoint Gymnastics in Boothwyn with his wife, Christina.

Roth spent 13 years from 1998 to 2011 in the Hip Hop costume.

He competed for Temple University from 1988 to 1993, taking two world championships with the U.S. national team, and competing in the Pan Am Games and the Olympic trials in the early 1990s.

Roth drew on his gymnastics experience to create an acrobatic mascot. His daughter, Adrienne,  performed alongside him.

Then in 2011, his character was retired.

Now the Sixers want Hip Hop back.

Roth, 55, is studying his old moves and creating new ones.

“Did I ever think I’d put the costume on again? No, but am I excited about it? Because again, it brings back these amazing memories, yeah.”
