As a STICA signatory, we stand with other Scandinavian apparel and textile companies in calling for a lower VAT on second-hand clothing. Removing barriers to reuse is critical if Sweden is to achieve its circular economy ambitions. Lowering VAT on second-hand clothing is a simple and impactful reform that would accelerate the transition. Yesterday I joined a seminar on the much-loved OEKO-TEX® certification system, which got me thinking… As the EU prepares to roll out the Digital Product Passport (DPP) for textiles, one question I keep asking is: who will actually deliver these passports in practice? We all know there’s no shortage of players competing for that space, certification bodies, traceability platforms, data intermediaries… everyone wants to be the go-to DPP provider. The regulation will require structured, machine-readable product data from material composition and recycled content to chemicals, durability, and end-of-life instructions. For many brands, this feels like uncharted territory. At the same time, we already have voluntary schemes like OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN: - a consumer-facing QR code - verified supply chain traceability - assurance on safer chemistry and responsible production Of course, MADE IN GREEN is not the same as DPP (one is voluntary and certification-based, the other will be a legal requirement). But it’s interesting to see how eco-labels like this, along with platforms from Circularise, TrusTrace and others — might be positioned to help brands bridge the gap. 👉 Could existing certification schemes become the “on-ramps” to DPP compliance? 👉 Will brands lean on familiar eco-labels to ease their transition into mandatory digital traceability?
