Goldin published 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿: 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵, 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲, 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 in the Let’s Read and Find Out Science series. What began as a simple explanation for children evolved into the language we now use to understand major water challenges: 🌵 Too Little: Water scarcity 🌊 Too Much: Water excess and flooding 🧪 Too Polluted: Water contamination This approach was eventually adopted by leading global institutions such as the United Nations Water, The World Bank, and SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute. Today, it is how those of us who study the relationship between #water #resources and #sustainability analyze the impacts across the 2030 Agenda. 💦 Water is not only part of SDG 6. It is present in all SDGs and connects them. Scarcity, excess, or pollution trigger cascading effects on poverty, health, education, gender, biodiversity, the economy, and climate resilience. 🌍 When we talk about Water Stewardship strategies, this framework is the one that best allows us to anticipate and understand that behind every drop lies the future of global sustainability.

I recently came across an interesting piece of academic research that I think will be of interest to anyone working in clothing design, product development, recycling, or policy. The paper, "Assessing the circularity potential of textile flows for future markets in Denmark: A study of textile anatomy" by Heather Logan et al (DTU - Technical University of Denmark), looks closely at how the design of garments impacts their recyclability at end of life. https://lnkd.in/eAyrrSq2 Key takeaways from the study: 1) The researchers examined the physical make-up of garments—things like zips, buttons, linings, and fibre blends (“textile anatomy”). 2) Under current systems and technologies, less than 2% of garments analysed were suitable for high-quality recycling. 3) The biggest barriers were complex construction and mixed materials that are difficult to disassemble and process. The study also makes clear that this figure is not fixed — with changes in design, adoption of automated sorting/disassembly, and expansion of fibre separation and recycling infrastructure, this percentage could rise dramatically. In short, collection alone won’t deliver circularity — design choices at the start of a garment’s life will determine how recyclable it is at the end. For those in the industry, this is a reminder that product design decisions today directly affect recycling outcomes tomorrow. From Clarion-Clipperton to Clean Tech: The Debate Over Seabed Minerals I recently wrapped up a project with minerals expert Lyle Trytten looking at the economics of seabed mining. NGOs had asked for a sober assessment of whether harvesting polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone made sense. My long-standing rule of thumb is that if it costs 1x to do something on land, it costs 10x offshore, 100x underwater, and 1000x on the abyssal plain. The conversation with Lyle, who has decades of experience building and operating mines and now advises the IEA and NRCan, went well beyond this project. We dug into ore grades, where even 1% copper or nickel is considered good compared to most current terrestrial deposits. We talked about how substitution is already reshaping demand curves, with aluminum replacing copper in wiring, lower-grade stainless steels cutting nickel demand, and LFP batteries displacing nickel- and cobalt-heavy chemistries in EVs. Recycling was another focus: nickel and cobalt can be recovered at very high rates, stainless steel is essentially infinitely recyclable, and EV batteries are proving to have much longer second lives than expected before entering the recycling stream. Finally, we explored how the inevitable dismantling of pipelines, refineries, and tankers as fossil fuels collapse will release vast amounts of high-quality steel and other metals back into circulation. That could provide a hidden supply source lasting decades, reducing the pressure to extract from ever more difficult places like the deep ocean.

Two secrets to sustainability storytelling that sticks. I have seen a pattern in sustainability: the most powerful data often fails, while the simplest stories change everything. It’s not the what. It’s the why and how. We are not just sharing information. We are fighting for attention and action. To win, you need two tools: 1. Repetition/Rhythm Don't just state a fact. Build a mantra. "Nature knows no waste. Waste is a human design. A flawed design." This is not just repetition. It’s rhythm. It transforms a concept into a conviction, making it impossible to ignore. 2. Symmetry/Mirror Show the tension. Force the reflection. "We are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change, and the last generation who can do something about it." This is not a statement. It’s a challenge. It frames the stark reality against the urgent opportunity and compels your audience to choose a side. Forget jargon. This is about strategic communication. Your next message won't just be heard, it will be felt. Which one works for your sustainability storytelling?
