Today I'm proud to announce that BIOKOL has delivered Rainbow's first 1,000-year permanence credits. Biokol.se, a pioneering biochar project in Sweden, is now validated under the Rainbow Standard, representing our first credit issuance and one of the first market issuances for biochar with this permanence horizon. This major milestone makes BIOKOL one of the first projects globally to meet rigorous certification standards that align with the latest research on biochar carbon removal permanence. Project highlights: BIOKOL brings together small-scale Swedish producers using pyrolysis technology to turn sustainably sourced forestry residues into biochar. Each tonne locks away 2.6 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in stable form, long-term. The project also delivers meaningful co-benefits: → 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱: applying biochar at 8 tonnes of biochar/hectare on farms raises average yields by 13% while locking carbon into the soil (which restores soil health and combats soil degradation) → 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: biochar replaces conventional fertilizer, cutting nitrous oxide by at least 12% → 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: the project powers every operation at both project sites with electricity certified as 100% renewable, delivering a fossil-free energy mix and promoting renewable energy → 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: BIOKOL's distributed model reduces transport distances and supports rural economies with quality jobs This is the kind of project we need for real carbon removal and climate impact, now. 🔬 Driving innovation in molecular diagnostics for ATMP With a decades-long track record in molecular analysis, Mikael Kubista—a Swedish researcher and entrepreneur—has founded Precision BioAnalytics, a new company based at GoCo Health Innovation City in Mölndal. The company develops more sensitive and reliable molecular diagnostics to support research, clinical diagnostics, and the development of cell and gene therapies. One area of particular promise is the earlier detection of infectious diseases like tuberculosis, where more accessible and precise diagnostics could have global impact. 🧪 Precision BioAnalytics is strategically connected to the Swedish ATMP innovation cluster through collaborations with Göteborgs universitet , Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhuset, Chalmers tekniska högskola, AstraZeneca, and CCRM Nordic, which supports the field with infrastructure for clinical-grade manufacturing. Can a brownie help reduce iron deficiency and food waste? 🍫🩸 At Torsåker Farm – Axfoundation's development center for future food and materials – Axfoundation together with chefs, researchers, and nutritionists, has developed a new kind of Swedish “fika” through the project Blood & Turnip: A brownie made with 20% Swedish cattle blood. Why blood? – Nearly half of slaughter by-products from cattle and pigs that could become food are instead turned into biogas or feed. Only 3% of cattle blood from slaughter is currently used in food. – The Blood Brownie contains 20% cattle blood, replacing eggs, and whole-grain rye flour instead of refined wheat. A 20 g brownie contains 1.9 mg iron, equal to 13% of the recommended daily intake for women of childbearing age. 💫 This innovation transforms an underused byproduct into a yummy chocolate treat – combining taste, improving nutrition and sustainability. Four research-based innovation projects from Uppsala University will take part in the Nordic Innovation Fair in Copenhagen next week. One of them is Sang Biotech, founded by Marie Jeansson, which develops new antibody therapies for kidney and cardiovascular diseases. “My experience as someone quite new to the biotech world is that every meeting brings more knowledge and that there is always something to learn. I’m genuinely impressed by how generous people are with their time and networks in supporting me and the project I represent,” she says. This marks the first time Uppsala University is participating in the Nordic Innovation Fair. By coordinating the participation, UU Innovation provides researchers with a platform for international outreach, valuable feedback, and connections that are crucial for their continued development. New evidence shows that women with #PCOS face elevated risks of #autoimmune #disease not only after diagnosis, but years before. A study in Clinical Endocrinology by Dorte Glintborg, Marianne Skovsager Andersen, and colleagues followed more than 30,000 women with PCOS and 150,000 matched controls across the Danish national health registries. The findings are notable: • Women with PCOS were about 50 percent more likely to develop an autoimmune disease compared to controls • This elevated risk was evident years before diagnosis and persisted afterward • The strongest signals were for type 1 diabetes, where women with PCOS were more than three times as likely to be affected after diagnosis, and for autoimmune thyroid disease • Risk was higher among women with PCOS who also had higher BMI, infertility, comorbidities, or lower income 💡 Why this matters These results show that women with PCOS are more likely to develop autoimmune disease than women without PCOS. Importantly, the excess risk was already present long before a formal PCOS diagnosis, suggesting shared biology rather than treatment effects or increased medical surveillance alone. Limitations and next steps The study relies on registry data, so it cannot capture antibody status, disease activity, or detailed PCOS phenotypes. Still, the consistency of elevated risk across both pre- and post-diagnosis windows argues for meaningful links between endocrine, metabolic, and immune pathways. Future research should integrate biomarkers, phenotyping, and longitudinal follow-up to clarify mechanisms and test whether improving metabolic health can reduce autoimmune risk. This work adds to the growing recognition that women’s health research must embrace the intersections of reproductive, metabolic, and immune pathways.
