your system is secure. I also describe how to personalize the SUSE Linux desk-

top so that it works just as you would like.

Once you’re up and running, you can use SUSE Linux for everday tasks.

You’ll discover how to listen to music and watch videos on your computer.

Following this, you’ll find significant coverage of OpenOffice.org, the powerful

office suite that comes with SUSE Linux. For photo editing, I devote a chapter to

The GIMP, a powerful image-manipulation program. I also explain how to use the

BASH shell, and provide an appendix with a detailed list of BASH commands that

you can use for reference.

This second edition of Beginning SUSE Linux has been updated for version

10.1 and above. There is a new focus throughout on using both KDE and

GNOME desktops, and all chapters have been rewritten to take into account

the cutting-edge software introduced with SUSE Linux 10.1. In particular, the

multimedia section has been significantly updated, as has the hardware config-

uration chapter, which now explains how to configure the majority of peripherals

in everyday use.
