Higher range remains a huge selling point for US consumers, but still begs the question – is it really necessary for the average driver?

Chinese automaker GAC Aion aims to be one of the first in China to deliver a long-sought NEDC range of 1,000 km (~621 miles) with its new LX Plus electric SUV. Calculating the number of miles of remaining EV range has been a challenge for many automakers. Ford now claims that its Intelligent Range feature has solved the problem, using crowdsourced data, weather, and a vehicle’s energy-consumption history.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk earlier this week claimed that the “Long Range Plus” version of the Model S was robbed of achieving a 400-mile range rating by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During the Q1 earnings call, Musk said that the EPA left the car’s door open and the key inside when stopping during range testing, resulting in the car losing 2% of battery capacity. The EPA now refutes Musk’s claim.
The UK’s RAC Foundation, a transport policy group, studied the mileage covered by motorists in Great Britain. RAC discovered that Tesla drivers cover more miles per year, on average, that owners of any other car.
The release of the Porsche Taycan’s range numbers in January landed with a thud. It was taken as a sign of inferiority that Porsche’s 93.4kWh battery yielded only 201 and 192 miles for the Turbo and Turbo S version, respectively. But EPA data now reveals that the company voluntarily lowered the range numbers.
Xpeng is boasting that its P7 EV boasts the highest range of EVs made or assembled in China. This was verified by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China.
