Deeptech: Why technology alone is not enough In latest calls of #deeptech startups & spinoffs looking for mentorship, I have detected an increasing trend towards asking for competences that startups do not naturally feature, such as financing (public & private), commercial channels and business planning. On the other side, there is a decreasing trend on seeking advice on the technological side, assuming that startups have this field sufficiently covered and that senior mentors are not so familiar with upcoming technologies. For example, I remember an uncomfortable occasion when I asked why a certain technology application had been chosen as primary, and not another. We are missing a key additional element: The Management of Technology. What is contemplated under this topic? - Technology Scouting / Intelligence / Forecasting & Watch: Which technologies your competence has and how are they protected, as It could severely affect your developments. Includes searching patent & paper database, screening those that could hamper your future business (*). - Technology Protection: Your strategy & actions on how to protect your tecnologies. Which ones, which instruments (patents, industrial secret, etc.), which countries. - Technology Shielding: Strategy and methdology about how to proactively reduce your risks in the view of your competence's technological assets (specially *). And last, but not least: - Technology Strategy: Defining which R&D projects should be launched every year....and which to stop or slow down. And, additionally, all technology transfer (inwards and/or outwards) property / licensing agreements. All this need not to be expensive, and does not only apply to selective stock market companies, I can assure you. Nice to have or a must have?
