California’s new law regulating #AI #companion #chatbots marks a significant, first-in-the-nation step toward safer digital #mentalhealth interactions, particularly for minors. The law, signed by Governor Newsom, introduces mandatory safety protocols for AI companion chatbot operators. This legislation targets companion chatbots, explicitly excluding customer-service and internal-use bots. It responds to tragic incidents and concerns regarding the safety of vulnerable users interacting with unregulated AI. The law is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
