  • One-pot synthesis of TBTA-functionalized coordinating polymers

    Reactive and Functional Polymers

A one-pot method for the functionalization of polyvinylbenzyl chloride with a tris-(benzyltriazolylmethyl)amine (TBTA) ligand via the copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC) is reported, where the ligand is constructed simultaneously with its attachment to the polymer backbone. A hydrophobic TBTA polymer as well as co-polymers containing TBTA ligands were also prepared to demonstrate the possibility of tailoring the properties of the polymers. The polymers were…

The polymers were characterized with FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, contact angle measurement, differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis. The metal coordinating properties of films prepared from the polymers was also demonstrated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and their structures inspected by scanning electron microscopy.

  • Conjugated Anthracene Dendrimers with Monomer-Like Fluorescence

    RSC Advances

Two generations of highly emissive conjugated anthracene dendrimers containing up to 9 anthracene units are presented. In these dendrimers, anthracene-like absorption and emission properties are preserved due the relatively weak electronic coupling between the anthracene units, while evidence of a fast crosstalk within the molecular framework is still observed.

  • Photon upconversion facilitated molecular solar energy storage

    Journal of Materials Chemistry A

Photon upconversion is used to facilitate the production of a solar fuel. This is done by collocating a triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion system in a microfluidic device with a molecular solar thermal energy storage system. Incoherent truncated white light is used to drive the reaction and the green part of the spectrum is upconverted to blue light, which in turn is absorbed by the solar fuel.

  • Toward Plasmonic Biosensors Functionalized by a Photoinduced Surface Reaction

    J. Phys. Chem C

We present a method for efficient coupling of amine nucleophilic molecules of choice to a nanostructured gold surface via photoinduced surface chemistry. The method is based on photoactive self-assembled monolayers and can be used to functionalize localized surface plasmon resonance.
(LSPR) based biosensors with biorecognition motifs while
reducing nonspecific binding via introduction of hydrophilic
    unit.

  • Molecular Solar Thermal (MOST) Energy Storage and Release System

The dearth of effective solar energy storage technologies makes the sun, an essentially infinite energy source, quite a surprisingly
small contributor to power generation worldwide. In particular, the diurnal nature of solar radiation and dependence on climatic
factors can make large scale solar energy power generation impractical for inclusion in our present electrical power grid. To
overcome these obstacles and satisfy the needs of load leveling, new effective technologies for long term solar energy storage are
necessary. Here, we explore one possible solution: the storage of solar energy in the chemical bonds of photosensitive molecules (a
photochemical reaction) and subsequent recovery of the energy in a back reaction in the form of heat, reversibly. We report on a full
cycle molecular solar thermal (MOST) system based on a bis(1,1-dimethyltridecyl) substituted derivative of FvRu2 that allows for
long term solar energy storage, and energy release upon exposure to a catalyst. Our findings suggest that MOST systems have
promising performance characteristics and with further optimization can be comparable to some other solar energy conversion/storage technologies. These findings may help inspire other work focused on developing analogous MOST systems that may some
day achieve large scale energy storage and conversion applications.

  • Aligned Growth of Gold Nanorods in PMMA Channels: Parallel Preparation of Nanogaps

    ACS Nano

We demonstrate alignment and positional control of gold nanorods grown in situ on substrates using a seed-mediated synthetic approach. Alignment control is obtained by directing the growth of spherical nanoparticle seeds into nanorods in well-defined poly(methyl methacrylate) nanochannels. Substrates with prepatterned metallic electrodes provide an additional handle for the position of the gold nanorods and yield nanometer-sized gaps between the electrode and nanorod. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.

A study of self-assembled molecular monolayers (SAMs) of complexes between Os(II)/(III), Fe(II)/(III), and Ru(II)/(III) and a 2,2′,6′,2′′-terpyridine (terpy) derivative linked to Au(111)-electrode surfaces via a 6-acetylthiohexyloxy substituent at the 4′-position of terpy is presented. The complexes were prepared in situ by first linking the terpy ligand to the surface via the S-atom, followed by addition of suitable metal compounds.
