😬 More than 500k cars 🚗 from Chinese-Owned OEMs in the first half of 2025 in Europe! Registrations are up >30% YoY 📈! 👉 Let me know if you need chart as a PDF or high resolution version, just leave a comment! 👉 As always, just my personal perspective - add yours below! ➡️ The invasion of Chinese-owned 🇨🇳 car brands in Europe is seen as severe threat by global automotive giants and industry leaders 🚗. ➡️ Chinese OEMs like BYD, CHERY, XPENG, GEELY or NIO have to export their products as the domestic demand for the created production overcapacity is not strong enough. ➡️ ASEAN and Latin American markets have been selected as priority, next to Europe. I recommend to have an eye on Thailand 🇹🇭, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Mexico 🇲🇽 or Brazil 🇧🇷. ➡️ Imports in these countries are crazy high 😱, local production facilities are set up. Toyota Motor Corporation, Stellantis, General Motors and other OEMs with business and ambitions in the regions feel the heat 🔥. Here are the details of Chinese OEMs in Europe: ➡️ The growth story of the year 🌟: CHERY managed to grow from zero to >36k registered vehicles 🚗 within a year, focusing on affordable 🤑 ICEs in selected markets. Best example for it’s not all about BEVs and the largest markets. ➡️ Min 2️⃣x on country level: The customers in Spain 🇪🇸 and Poland seem to be very responsive to the portfolio of Chinese OEMs. Registrations soared by more than 100% in both countries. ➡️ Accelerated growth 🚀: The obvious suspects, BYD EUROPE, XPENG or Zeekr Europe quadruple the volume. BYD is leading by far distance, it’s on a good trajectory to surpass market leader MG. ➡️ MG Motor Europe is just growing by 20% YoY, a new lineup of vehicles could accelerate growth again 🤷‍♂️. ➡️GEELY brands like Polestar, Lynk & Co or Zeekr Europe are back on a growth track but the additional volume is not enough to offset the decline of Volvo Cars in Europe 😬. Order of counties is shifting: ➡️ UK 🇬🇧 continues to lead on volume and is still growing strong with a 50% YoY increase. No surprise, as MG Motor Europe might be seen as domestic UK 🇬🇧 brand. ➡️ Sweden 🇸🇪 leads on market share. Similar narrative as with MG in UK could be applied to GEELY brands and the heritage of the brands in Sweden. ➡️ Spain and Italy overtook Germany in volume and market share. Poland is becoming a major market for Chinese brands as well, volume is already on the level of France. Earlier this month, BMW Group unveiled the new 𝐢𝐗3 — 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐞 𝐊𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐕𝐬. It’s being called a make-or-break moment for the company, but it also highlights a broader challenge. For Europe’s automotive sector, the stakes go beyond market share. 🚌 Delighted to have moderated the panel "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼-𝗦𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆​. 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁?" at IAA MOBILITY 2025 in our Smart Mobility Space yesterday! L4 #autonomous #driving is reality with >2.000 robo-taxis in driver-out operations in the US (Waymo) and in China (Baidu Apollo). While promising players emerge in #Europe, the debate still focuses on robo-shuttle pilots with public transit operators, a fragmented regulatory landscape and financing gaps. Therefore, our panel brought together mobility visionaries to explore how we can finally scale up a shared autonomous vehicle ecosystem in Europe. Key insights included: 💡 Most attractive applications in first years (2027+) are seen in on-demand public transit and off-peak fix lines in metropolitan areas with demand for several hundred to thousand vehicles; as approvals accelerate and TCO go down rural areas become viable 💡 New AD players in Europe focus on distinct parts of the value chain (like shuttle manufacturer HOLON or end-to-end AI software provider Wayve) requiring alliances and collaboration to meet PTO requirements for a full solution; given the fragmented EU markets most of these players aim for scale by also entering the large US market (HOLON) - and expand their portfolio to L2+/3 solutions (Wayve, Momenta) 💡 US players launched with a full solution, but Waymo is starting to hand over vehicle ownership & fleet operations to partners; will Chinese players follow a similar path? Baidu Apollo launch in Zurich will be with local partners - to be announced in a few weeks 💡 European governments need to urgently move forward with their plans to harmonize AD vehicle type approvals and for AD fleet operating licences across cities; starting with some large "flagship regions" - a topic for the next EU Auto Dialogue on Friday 💡 For production and deployment of the first 10.000+ vehicles in Europe, EU / national funds seem inevitable to bridge the finance gap that European players are currently facing.
