Work in the Digital Era: How Technology is Transforming Work and Occupations 2025 | jointly authored by E. Fernández-Macías, I. González Vázquez, S. Torrejón Pérez, L. Nurski; prepared by the European Commission The mission of this book is to provide a comprehensive examination of how digital technologies are reshaping the nature of work, occupations, and labor markets across Europe and globally. By evaluating structural transformations in employment, skill demand, and occupational frameworks, the study aims to equip policymakers, academics, and business leaders with the analytical foundation to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the digital economy. The analysis highlights compelling quantitative findings: between 2010 and 2024, employment in technology-intensive sectors grew by more than 35%, while demand for advanced digital skills increased by 60%, outpacing traditional occupational growth by a factor of three. Conversely, routine-intensive jobs declined by nearly 20%, reflecting the substitution effects of automation and AI. Productivity gains from digital adoption averaged 1.8 percentage points annually across EU economies, with firms integrating AI-enabled systems reporting efficiency improvements of up to 25% compared to non-adopters. The study emphasizes that the returns on investment (ROI) and resilience of digital transformation vary by sector. Knowledge-intensive industries observed ROE improvements of 4–6 percentage points, primarily through automation of cognitive tasks and enhanced human-machine collaboration. However, risk-reward asymmetries remain evident: while digitalization drives efficiency and innovation, it also generates displacement pressures, labor polarization, and resilience challenges in vulnerable sectors. Policymakers must therefore balance efficiency gains with strategies for inclusive labor market adaptation. In conclusion, the digital era is not merely altering how work is performed but fundamentally restructuring the economic and social fabric of employment. The integration of AI, robotics, and digital platforms is delivering measurable gains in ROI, ROE, and systemic efficiency while simultaneously intensifying inequality and workforce polarization.
