Last year Swappie started a company driven concept of Community Clubs. We did acrobatics, chess, beach volley, repaired our bikes and learned how to knit and to invest in stocks and much more ✨ This initiative has now started to live a life of its own, as swappians are autonomously connecting and suggesting things to do together, hobbies to try out with others. During the last quarter only,  cross-functional teams have gathered together to visit a horse stable, play tennis and make beads accessories! 🐎🎾📿 In most cases the clubs have brought our people together, but sometimes it might go the other way around - There is an existing people connection, and a club is built on that.  One example is the beads accessory club, run by Swappie Supply team's Olga and Andrea: "We always try to do things together when meeting at Helsinki HQ as Andrea is working remotely from Madrid.  We volunteered for the Swappie summer party organizing committee and were thinking how to do a community club together during the week.  We wanted it to be related to the party and an engaging DIY club for the colleagues.  And so we thought why not creating our own accessories to wear at the colourful party! On this International E-Waste Day, the urgency of our global electronic waste problem is clearer than ever: In 2022, the world produced a staggering 62 million tonnes of e-waste, enough to fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks! 😲 In Europe alone, some 14.4 million tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment were placed on the market, and just 5.0 million tonnes of e-waste were collected. 😥 Just seeing these numbers might feel overwhelming, but luckily there are things we can do to promote circularity and reduce e-waste! 📱 Shift the Consumption Mindset (Reduce & Rethink) The most effective way to reduce e-waste is to not create it in the first place. Resist the upgrade cycle for only a minor feature improvement. And when buying a device, prioritize durability and longevity, and check the repairability (e.g. available spare parts). Best impact is to purchase high-quality, certified refurbished electronics from a reputable platform or seller (like Swappie!). 🪛 Extend Product Lifespan (Reuse & Repair) Keeping a device working for as long as possible is the heart of the circular economy. Repair everything possible yourself or take to a professional, maintain your devices by e.g. protective cases and screen protectors, or sell for refurbishment (again - Swappie is here to help!).  ♻️ Responsible End-of-Life Management (Recycle) When a device is truly at its end-of-life, ensure the valuable and hazardous materials are recovered properly.  Never put electronics in a regular bin, but take them to a collection point, or utilize take-back schemes (e.g. retailer take-back is a requirement in EU!). 📣 Advocate for Systemic Change (Promote Policy) Your consumer behavior sends a signal, but your voice drives regulation!   Support the Right to Repair legislation, or participate in public consultations for new EU policies like the upcoming EU Circular Economy Act. Our Head of Public Affairs Claire Darmon was amongst the participants invited to exchange with Commissioner Jessika Roswall today to discuss the upcoming simplification of environmental legislation. 🌍 The most environmentally impactful phase of a smartphone's life? Its production. Depending on the study, the manufacturing process alone accounts for 78-95% of a device's total emissions. That's why we're so proud to announce a truly impressive milestone: we've repaired 1.5 million devices at Swappie since 2018! ♻️📣💚 Beyond the huge reduction in carbon emissions, Swappians and our customers have together made a significant environmental impact by reducing and recycling harmful e-waste and by saving a massive amount of resources — think precious metals, rare earth elements, and all the energy that goes into mining them. Our Repair Department Lead, Allar Satsi, has been at the very heart of this journey throughout his Swappie career. He has witnessed constant improvements in our repair processes and the development of our team's skills, most recently with the introduction of automation lines that show a powerful collaboration between human and machine. Allar shared his thoughts on this achievement: "It never ceases to amaze me how the learning never stops here. When people are motivated and willing to learn, no heights are unreachable. It brings me so much joy to share this 1.5 million milestone with our process owners, key stakeholders, and everyone in Swappie Operations. 💡 What if you could tackle your high-concentration tasks AND connect with colleagues in just one meeting? We've been exploring a concept at Swappie called Focus Buddying, and the results are too good not to share 📣 For one month, our team met weekly in a simple format: ⭐ Pair up with a "buddy" ⭐ State your task for the next 50 minutes ⭐ Work silently with cameras on and mics off ⭐ Update each other on your progress This simple structure not only helped people complete tasks that often get pushed aside but also created a stronger sense of community. The mastermind behind this concept, Swappie's Community Coordinator Emma Wheatley shared that the participants truly considered the focus buddying beneficial, calling it a "simple, yet effective way to boost productivity" and a "nice way to get to know colleagues outside one's own team."
