Thanks to David Lang and Optica for highlighting the long-standing legacy of the Finnish photonics industry! Vexlum is a proud member of the current Finnish optics and photonics ecosystem, 40 years after the original magazine article. #quantum #optics #photonics Jussi-Pekka Penttinen Mircea Guina
Multi-domain science & tech policy government relations leader experienced in coalition building, communications, and Congressional and Administration advocacy.
The otherwise utilitarian stairwell at Optica HQ in Washington, DC is colorfully adorned with covers from past editions of our magazine, Optics (& Photonics) News. 40 years later, this issue, which caught my attention, seems particularly prescient. “Quantum Mechanical Computers,” written by Richard Feynman of Caltech, fancies how the weirdness of quantum physics could make a pretty nifty, albeit rather different-looking, computer. A timely reminder that incredible technologies derive from fundamental research by many experts over many, many years. Meanwhile, the cover story showcases the pre-telecom boom days of Finland’s optics and photonics ecosystem. Now, the small Nordic nation is brimming with companies like Vexlum, Dispelix, Inkron, Modulight Corporation, Quanscient, and Nokia (all are Optica Corporate Members). We're proud to share an article on how VECSELs are enabling a new era of capabilities in Quantum was just published in Photonics Spectra. Co-authored by Vexlum co-founders Jussi-Pekka Penttinen and Mircea Guina, along with Vexlum US president Philip Makotyn, the piece tells the story of how the unique features in VECSELs—such as wavelength selection flexibility, high powers, and narrow linewidths—are suited to meet the demands of next-generation quantum technologies. https://lnkd.in/gHy_Yiqn
HOT OFF THE PRESS! I'm incredibly grateful for another "first", being a contributing author in a high-profile magazine! My co-authors, Jussi-Pekka Penttinen and Mircea Guina, and I tell the story of emerging #Quantum technologies and how the new entry of robust, powerful, and versatile lasers (VECSELs) are enabling an era of next-generation quantum capabilities. The story of Vexlum and the interplay of our optically pumped semiconductor lasers with atomic based quantum technologies is a joy to tell. Thanks to Photonics Spectra and Photonics Media for highlighting the importance of enabling technologies, specifically photonics, in pushing the quantum frontier. Special thanks to Jake Saltzman and Matthew Beebe. Next step, Rolling Stone magazine, here I come. https://lnkd.in/gxpvJsbT

🎉 We at Vexlum are thrilled to congratulate Dr. Tobias Franzen and Dr. Liam Gallagher from Durham University's Quantum Light and Matter group on receiving the prestigious Quantum Technology Career Acceleration Fellowships from UK Research and Innovation. We're especially excited to collaborate with Dr. Franzen on his groundbreaking work to develop scalable quantum network systems using Ytterbium (Yb) qubits and standard optical fibers. We support this effort by simplifying the complex laser systems that currently limit scalability. Scientific collaboration is at the heart of what we do, and we're honored to contribute to cutting-edge research through close partnerships also in UK. #QuantumTechnology #QuantumNetworking #ResearchCollaboration https://lnkd.in/gyqikRy3

As a builder of advanced Watt-level low-noise lasers, available at any wavelength for atomic based quantum technologies, it's fantastic to see Vexlum included in the quantum computing landscape survey! The variety and large number of companies in the ecosystem shows how enabling technologies and supply chains are critical for the advancement of quantum.
Quantum computing is no longer speculative—it’s becoming an investment priority. (Updated map with new companies added and suggestions from all of you) We have added the following new companies: 1- IonQ 2- InfinityQ Technology Inc 3- Oxford Instruments plc 4- Sparrow Quantum 5- Menlo Systems 6- Octave Photonics 7- PolarisQB and more. In 2023, European quantum startups outpaced North America, raising $781 million (three times the $240 million raised in the US). Globally, quantum startups raised $2.2 billion, a massive jump from $522 million in 2019. This isn’t happening in a vacuum. Governments are fueling the momentum. The UK has committed $4.3 billion to quantum technologies, while Germany has pledged $3.7 billion. At the same time, VC interest is holding steady, even as funding dries up in other tech sectors. Quantum technology will have a wide-reaching impact, from cybersecurity and financial modeling to drug discovery and materials science. Pharma will likely see the earliest impact (drug development and molecular simulations using quantum). In 2022, Finnish startup Algorithmiq raised $4 million for quantum-powered drug discovery, while Paris-based Qubit Pharmaceuticals secured $17 million for molecular simulations. Another European company, Terra Quantum AG, based in Switzerland, raised $75 million to scale its quantum-as-a-service model, which has direct applications in pharma and beyond. Big Tech is also all-in. Google, IBM, Intel Corporation, and NVIDIA are pouring resources into quantum hardware and software. Meanwhile, publicly traded quantum companies have seen their stocks surge, signaling growing institutional confidence. At APEX Ventures, we invest in revolutionary quantum startups. Examples from our portfolio include kiutra, enabling the second quantum revolution with easy-to-use and sustainable cryogenics, and planqc, building quantum computers that store information in individual atoms. For founders and investors, the question isn’t whether quantum will matter—it’s when. The trajectory is clear: capital is flowing, enterprise adoption is accelerating, and governments are fully committed. If AI dominated the last decade, quantum may own the next. A huge thank you for the incredible support on our previous post — and for all your thoughtful suggestions! We’ve done our best to incorporate as many as possible. If you find any oversights, please let us know in the comments so we can keep it in mind moving forward. #Venturecapital #AI #Deeptech #Startups Follow us at APEX Ventures and subscribe to our newsletter for exclusive content on groundbreaking Deep Tech startups: 🔗 https://t2m.io/EV2qHQuo
