💡 The buzz around Sweden, Superintelligence Computing Systems top 5, sovereign infrastructure and data-centers and is the future of intelligence actually more of an energy play? Reporting from day 2 of RAISE Summit here in Paris together with Alexander Brunner for AI Sweden. We have seen Anton Osika and Fredrik Cassel  talk about Lovables "insane growth curve", we heard Henri Delahaye talk to Eric Schmidt about what he believes the near future looks like and especially the need for energy, listened in on Andrew Feldman about the future of chips and AI-platforms plus a lot more. Some thoughts on this: ⚡ Is the future of intelligence an energy play? Intelligence is becoming an energy business. The next frontier in AI leadership seems not to be about model size or parameter count, but access to electrons. Mentioned several times: Training and serving modern foundation models is essentially the art of turning terawatt-hours into tokens. Data-centers already consume 1 to 2 % of global electricity (415 TWh in 2024) and the International Energy Agency expects demand to more than double to ~945 TWh by 2030 (roughly Japan’s entire power use today) with some estimates that 30% of global power supply will go to data centers. The World Economic Forum warns that, on current trajectories, AI alone could breach 1 000 TWh as early as 2026. And power grids are feeling it, mostly from data-centers and higher demand=higher prices if supply doesn't follow, or? Nordic data-centers demand is forecast to jump 110 % by 2030, straining even our fairly robust grids. 🇪🇺 Why sovereign AI infrastructure is a new strategic depth. Jensen said a couple of months ago that “No country can afford to outsource its intelligence" and if electrons and data are the currency of intelligence, owning and controlling them matters. What is somewhat clear is that a lot of US AI-companies (neoclouds + others) come to Europe unprepared. Europe’s AI Act and GDPR make data-locality non-negotiable: hence Google and Microsoft's regional Swedish cloud regions are of course a response to this. The EuroHPC is funding a network of public “AI Factories” so European can tap into GPUs and hopefully build applications that matters for Europe. What few talks about is the industrial advantage of Europe and especially Sweden. 🇸🇪 Sweden’s once-in-a-generation opportunity Even though we have heard a lot of bashing on Sweden's position in the AI-race, we start this part of the race miles ahead: nearly 99 % of our electricity already comes from low-carbon sources: hydro, nuclear and wind with the potential to build green data centers (hint: EcoDataCenter). Add a sub-arctic climate and cold lake water, and you have world-class system. We hear a lot about Silicon Valhalla, and that's good but the real momentum might be in our electricity, access to competence and to advance industry. Using AI to create a more competitive Sweden for the future. I am for sure looking forward to what's coming!
