ESA is an international organisation with 23 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's 23 Member States are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members. Canada takes part in some projects under a cooperation agreement. Four other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

European Space Agency - ESA a republié ceci
The European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) near Madrid holds a truly unique place in ESA’s history. Its origins date back to 1974, when the Villafranca site, then known as VILSPA, was established as a satellite tracking station supporting some of ESA’s earliest and most pioneering missions: the International Ultraviolet Explorer, Hipparcos, Meteosat, and many more. Since then, ESAC has evolved far beyond its initial role, becoming a world-class centre of scientific excellence managing Europe’s space observatories and space science missions. Today, ESAC is a treasure trove where space data are processed, archived, and shared with a global community of over 30,000 scientists every month. Its mission is clear and vital: to make space science visible, accessible, and impactful for researchers and citizens alike. Through ESAC, we confront humanity’s greatest cosmic questions and deepen our understanding of our place in the universe. Today, we took a significant step forward by reinforcing ESA’s presence in Spain and strengthening our partnership with the Agencia Espacial Española in key areas such as Space Safety, Earth Observation, and Navigation. As the world around us changes rapidly, preparing for future challenges is more important than ever. I am grateful that Spain and Spanish industry stand as strong, reliable partners in this journey. As we approach the upcoming ESA Ministerial Council 2025 in Bremen, the stakes have never been higher. We must equip ESA to meet today’s demands and anticipate tomorrow’s needs. This Ministerial Council will be a defining moment, reflecting Europe’s evolving geopolitical landscape and the urgent need for bold decisions to enhance our resilience for the long term. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Minister Diana Morant Ripoll from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain for her wise leadership, and to Juan Carlos Cortés for his outstanding work. Your dedication helps make ESA stronger and better every day. https://lnkd.in/dtjCdCBF

✍️x3️⃣ As ESA’s presence in Spain is set to be strengthened, three contracts with Spanish industry were signed today that build towards a Zero Debris future: 🔸Upgrading the Spanish Space Surveillance and Tracking Surveillance Radar (S3TSR) The S3TSR conducts a continuous 24/7 scanning of the sky for the detection and daily monitoring of thousands of space debris objects, providing a key European space surveillance and tracking capability. The new contract, signed by Indra Space director Luis Mayo and ESA Director of Operations Rolf Densing, unlocks a major upgrade of the radar that will allow the doubling of the number of objects detected, making space operations even safer and significantly boosting Spain’s contribution to European space safety efforts. The project shows the fruitful results of entrusting the management of a national space surveillance and tracking project to ESA. 🔸ESA-AEE cooperation on the CAT Mission ESA has started to prepare satellites with standard interfaces for capture and removal to simplify removing debris from orbit. Practicing the removal of such prepared satellites in space is a key step to make the goal of Zero Debris by 2030 achievable for our new missions. In this context, ESA and Agencia Espacial Española, represented by Rolf Densing and Juan Carlos Cortés respectively, intend to collaborate on ESA’s CAT in-orbit demonstration mission. The CApTure Payload Bay (CAT) mission, being built by Spanish company GMV, will demonstrate ESA’s new standardised interface for capture and removal. LUR-1 – a Spanish satellite already in space with the interface onboard – will now be proposed as the target satellite for CAT to test the removal technologies and operations in space. More on ESA’s CAT mission 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQsbTNms 🔸Agencia Espacial Española signs the Zero Debris Charter It is always exciting to welcome another signatory to the Zero Debris community! Minister of Science and Innovation Diana Morant Ripoll, in the presence of ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, signed the Zero Debris Charter as the AEE President, showing the Agency’s commitment to a sustainable future in space. The fast-growing Zero Debris community (https://lnkd.in/drTuSh35) now counts over 180 signatories across 33 countries, including 20 national governments. Let’s go! 📸 Credit: ESA/Javier Estrada ESA Space Safety

📡 Calling satellite ground station operators across Europe! ESA’s #Estrack Augmented Network is evolving - and we’re opening to new partners. Commercial stations are currently complementing ESA’s Estrack core network through service contracts. Most play a critical role during launch and early orbit phases, and one is dedicated to deep space activities. In the near future, we will need to expand our capacity to support the increasing number of missions in cis-Lunar space, Sun-Earth Lagrange points (Lagrange Points 1 and 2), and deep space. We are opening up to new stations to meet this growing demand for deep-space tracking, telemetry, command, and science downlink. ESA invites interest from ground station operators across Europe who wish to: 💠 offer compatible capacity to support future ESA missions 💠 collaborate on developing interoperable ground station services 💠 contribute to a coordinated European ground infrastructure Raise your interest here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dtPdBbsc ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety
