“Addressing gender-based violence will harm the university’s reputation.” In fact, the opposite is true. Institutions that act with transparency and accountability earn lasting trust from students, staff and society. Those that deny or minimise harm risk far greater reputational fallout. In this week’s #WeeklyDebunk, GenderSAFE explores how to reframe fear into leadership and how transparency strengthens institutional reputation. 👉 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/ePuxJsjw

EU-funded project promoting comprehensive policies to end gender-based violence in academia & research
À propos
UniSAFE has finalised its mission: generating new insights on gender-based violence in universities and research organisations, developing recommendations and operational tools for institutions to address GBV. Starting March 2024 the GenderSAFE project, funded by the European Union, builds on the outputs developed by #UniSAFE and takes the work a step further by promoting comprehensive policies to end GBV in universities and research organisations and establish safe, inclusive, and respectful environments. Its strategy includes capacity-building, mutual learning and exchange, setting up instruments to monitor institutional policies and promoting policy uptake by national authorities and research funding organisations.

How can institutions turn commitments to address gender-based violence into real change❓ While many institutions adopt policies against gender-based violence, too often they lack the structures, resources, or monitoring mechanisms to ensure these policies are effective in practice. GenderSAFE is soon launching its Institutional Assessment Tool, a practical resource to guide higher education and research institutions toward real, measurable change in addressing #GenderBasedViolence. Discover the tool and how it can support your organisation in creating lasting impact: 📅 26 November | 11:00 CET 🔗 Find out more and register: https://lnkd.in/eB4H943y

🎓 “Institutions should focus on education, not social issues like gender-based violence.” But what does academic excellence mean if students and staff don’t feel safe? #GenderBasedViolence can lead to higher absenteeism, drop-out and disengagement. Institutions that act see stronger retention, wellbeing and reputation. 💡 Read our latest #WeeklyDebunk article to learn why addressing gender-based violence is central to academic excellence, not separate from it: https://lnkd.in/e_fzTK3X

And it's a wrap! Heartfelt gratitude to all our CoP participants for setting time aside to participate in this second in-person meeting! and a big thanks to our partner NKC gender & science for hosting us! From risk screening as a means of prevention, to risk assessment as a means of protection, setting professional boundaries, or avoiding conflicts of interest, participants actively engaged in discussions to operationalise our baseline policy framework for addressing gender-based violence, and improve their own institutional policy! Such enthusiasm and eargerness to see institutional change happen, these two days have been inspiring to us all! 💫

💪 Sleeves up and ready to work! They’ve come from across Europe -professionals from diverse institutions, roles, and countries- all united by a shared goal: advancing comprehensive institutional policies to prevent and address gender-based violence in research and higher education. Today and tomorrow, members of #GenderSAFE’s Community of Practice are meeting in Prague to take stock of progress in operationalising the zero-tolerance policy framework. The discussions will span legal, intersectional, and geographical perspectives, and include voices from students and national authorities. Organisations that have already tested the framework will also share valuable feedback to help refine and strengthen it further. 📄 Your input matters! Feedback on the draft baseline policy is welcome beyond the CoP. 👉 Read the draft here and send us your comments! https://lnkd.in/emrMgMGJ #GenderSAFE #GenderEquality #HigherEducation #ZeroTolerance #CommunityOfPractice

❓Have you ever come across an institution resisting the need to address #GenderBasedViolence because they already have a policy in place? 👉 A #policy on paper isn’t enough. Without implementation and monitoring, it risks becoming a symbolic gesture rather than real protection. 🔎 Our latest #WeeklyDebunk article explores how institutions can move from policy to practice, turning formal commitments into everyday #accountability: https://lnkd.in/ehTFe3V9

We are thrilled to have our project showcased as a good practice under the ERA Action on gender equality and inclusiveness at the WIDERA Feedback to Policy workshop! Thank you Lut Mergaert from Yellow Window Policy Design for representing GenderSAFE in Brussels and bringing forward our message: turning evidence into policy and supporting institutions to address gender-based violence systemically is key to lasting institutional change.
🔍 How can EU projects drive structural change in research and innovation? At today’s WIDERA Feedback to Policy (F2P) workshop in Brussels, our Research Director Lut Mergaert contributed to a joint presentation on advancing gender equality within the European Research Area (ERA), showcasing key insights from the GenderSAFE project. Selected as a good practice under the ERA Action “Promote gender equality and foster inclusiveness” GenderSAFE brings forward the voices of affected persons and underlines the urgent need for institutional transformation to address gender-based violence in academia and research. Lut’s intervention focused on aligning project impact with ERA policy priorities, drawing on concrete results to propose actionable recommendations. 📍Organised by the European Commission (European Research Executive Agency (REA) & DG RTD) 🗓 2 October 2025 | Brussels 🔗 Learn more about GenderSAFE: www.gendersafe.eu #GenderSAFE #ERA #WIDERA #HorizonEurope #PolicyFeedback #GenderEquality

"If gender-based violence were a real issue, people would report it"... Is this so? ⚠️ The UniSAFE survey found that only 13% of victims/survivors reported their experience of #GenderBasedViolence. The most common reasons for not reporting included fear of retaliation, concerns about confidentiality, uncertainty about procedures and the belief that nothing would change. Low reporting is often a systemic issue, while high reporting levels may in fact be a sign of trust in the system and not of increased incidence. 👉 In our new #WeeklyDebunk article, GenderSAFE shows how to reframe this resistance into a call for trust, transparency and responsibility: https://lnkd.in/ewQnGTV7
