Genomines a republié ceci
Genomines is creating plants that can extract minerals from the ground 🌱 Sustainable mining is one of the world's biggest challenges right now. We need metals to power green technologies and renewable energy, yet we still depend on mining practices of the last century in order to build them. Mining is still one of the most polluting industries in the world. Take for example Nickel: (a metal we need to make anything from batteries 🪫 to everyday utensils) Nickel mines take on average 15 YEARS to become operational, and up to 10 years to close down. Mining Nickel requires the use of chemicals that can be damaging to the land, and nearby water sources. The team behind Genomines is using the power of #syntheticbio to create plants that are genetically engineered to accummulate Nickel. Instead of mining, these plants are planted in areas that are rich in Nickel and harvested after a few months. Genomines will be able to extract metal resources from areas where traditional methods are not economically viable, as Nickel deposits are often distributed over large areas.
