Neutral atoms trapped in optical tweezers and addressed with laser beams are ideal indistinguishable quantum systems to realize superposition and entanglement, at the heart of powerful Quantum Information Processing. It is a highly scalable platform, benefiting from tens of years of development which has brought some of contemporary physics' most spectacular achievements: Bose-Einstein condensation, cavity quantum electrodynamics, etc... We develop the lasers, the vacuum technology, the electronic controls and the software stack to make the individual atoms accessible to quantum programmers worldwide.

Preparing for liftoff toward Quantum Advantage 🌑 What if neutral atom quantum computers could provide deeper insights into superconductivity, magnetism, and accelerate the design of tomorrow’s breakthrough materials? 🧲 Highly correlated electronic systems underlying these phenomena are among physics’ toughest challenges. Solving them could revolutionize energy technologies and quantum devices. Yet, simulating such complex interactions is particularly complex for today's quantum processing units. 💡 Our latest research breaks new ground. Using Pasqal’s Orion Alpha cloud-accessible QPU, we demonstrate a hybrid quantum-classical method to study strongly correlated matter. This includes the first implementation of the auxiliary spin approximation on a neutral atom platform, as well as the first analog quantum simulation of this complex electronic model using qubits. 🙌 We warmly acknowledge our collaborators at #EDFLab, Institut d'Optique Graduate School, Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives, and Eviden. They played a vital role in designing the model we needed to implement and worked closely with us to adapt it to the QPU capabilities and cloud infrastructure. Together, we brought the original algorithm to life on the QPU and benefitted greatly from their help with this experimental implementation. 🚀 Our pioneering hybrid approach opens new pathways for scalable, high-performance quantum simulations of real materials and advanced hybrid HPC-quantum algorithms. This work marks another important step in the global race to quantum advantage, where breakthroughs in fundamental science and close collaboration are accelerating progress toward reaching new, uncharted territories. Another quantum-computing company is coming to the Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park. Pasqal, a French startup, will set up its U.S. headquarters at the quantum park that’s being built on the sprawling former U.S. Steel South Works on the far South Side. It joins Silicon Valley startup PsiQuantum and Boulder, Colorado-based Infleqtion among the growing roster of companies that have announced plans to build quantum computers at the IQMP. Ever since Gov. JB Pritzker convinced legislators to commit $500 million to developing a quantum-computing industry, Illinois has been racing to establish itself as the leader in the space. It has been building critical mass in the nascent industry, signing up IBM and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency as tenants, along with Australian startup Diraq. Pasqal will invest at least $65 million to set up its first U.S. operations in Chicago and create 50 jobs under an agreement with the state, which is providing $6.1 million in incentives and a $15 million loan to the company. Quantum computing is still in the early phases of development, and there’s no guarantee the technology live up to hype that it will revolutionize drug discovery, materials science or information security. With the support of the State of Illinois’ MICRO program, we will invest over $65 million in this new site and create 50 new high-tech jobs in the region. We will install one of our quantum processing units in Chicago. This milestone marks a major step in our global mission to bring real-world quantum advantage. It was a great pleasure to visit IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center last week.
