The Nobel Prize in Physics has just been awarded to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis! Awarded for showing quantum phenomena in macroscopic superconducting circuits. It is amazing that working in quantum tech means that we get to simultaneously work on fundamental physics (like in this Nobel) while at the same time building tech that can have large practical impact. It is much later generations of those superconducting circuits that were used to experimentally show the computational advantage in quantum computing (e.g. Google’s quantum supremacy work with Martinis as well). I was lucky to first get to work in the field as an undergrad researcher in Michel’s group at Yale. He and his work have had a huge impact on me personally. All three of the winners have trained so many people now in quantum information and technologies and have had a huge positive impact on the whole field and on science. Looking forward to more to come from quantum information science and technology. The field is still early and there are many more fundamental research questions that this technology can help answer (e.g. tabletop quantum gravity experiments, the measurement problem and Local Friendliness Violations, etc.)
