Reuniwatt successfully participated in the Aircraft Contrail Analysis Workshop 2025, organised by Contrails.org and held at Imperial College London on September 17-18. Our team, represented by Laurent Sauvage and Mehdi Ben Slama, proudly presented our poster on "Contrail characterisation with thermal ground-based all-sky imagers." ✈️📊 The workshop gathered top experts to address technical challenges in contrail observation and management—key for reducing aviation’s climate impact and proposing action plans. Several initiatives this year aimed to: ▪️Build a complete picture of contrail lifecycles, from inception to end-of-life ▪️Understand the capabilities and limitations of new MTG satellites ▪️Combine data from ground-based all-sky imagers, lidars, radars, and satellites, applying AI algorithms for automatic contrail detection, tracking, and aircraft matching ❇️ 𝗔 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗸𝘆 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝗼𝗳-𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁. Our Reuniwatt observation network could help. Benefits include: ✅ Improved MRV systems ✅ More contrail forcing avoided ✅ Reduced fuel consumption Another takeaway is the potential establishment of dedicated instrumented sites to: ▪️Accurately measure specific cases or provide a full atmospheric overview for contrail detection and characterisation ▪️Monitor radiative effect, optical depth, microphysics, cloud scenes, high-level humidity, and wind at contrail height for advection Research-based 24/7 all-sky imagers like our Sky Insight™ could complement these sites alongside lidars, microwave radiometers, and hyperspectral instruments. This will help define best practices for required data in flight trials. 🧩 By matching contrails to specific aircraft and validating contrail models, our technology supports better forecasts and operational strategies, such as rerouting tested by airlines like Amelia and SWISS. This work advances actionable solutions for aviation sustainability. We are excited to continue our proactive collaboration with the aviation and climate science communities to advance contrail mitigation! #AviationSustainability #ContrailManagement #ClimateAction
