🚀 Official Kickoff of the SOLiS Project at Thales Alenia Space in Toulouse! Thales Alenia Space, as leader of the SOLiS project consortium, has hosted today the kick-off of SOLiS project, alongside CNES representatives and partners in our premises in Toulouse. Called #SOLiS — for Service Optique de Liaisons Spatiales Sécurisées (secure optical space link service) — this project aims to demonstrate the efficiency of an optical communications service relying on geostationary satellites. Such a service is designed to make intercontinental networks more resilient at a time when there is a growing number of acts of sabotage targeting land and undersea optical fiber links. Geostationary satellites offer an effective and cost-effective solution for ultra-secure transfers of large amounts of data between two users on Earth, delivering very high data rates of up to one terabit per second despite distances and atmospheric disturbances. SOLiS harnesses technologies developed through the government-backed Optical Communications (CO-OP) project led by CNES, and draws on the outcomes of demonstrations delivered for the #VERTIGO project funded by the European Commission. This bold project will put manufacturers — large primes, mid-tier firms, SMEs, and startups — at the forefront in space communications for the 2030s as they strive to address the challenges of security, resilience, fast data rates, and multi-orbit interoperability. Best wishes to all people involved as they embark on this audacious project, including Thales Alenia Space teams from Toulouse, Cannes and Zurich facilities! 🛰️ Eager to know more about SOLiS? Yannick COMBET, Stratobus Program Director, took part this morning in a roundtable organized by the Association of Professional Aerospace Journalists (AJPAE) dedicated to High Altitude Pseudo Satellites. This event represented a huge opportunity to highlight our highly innovative #Stratobus, which combines the flexibility and autonomy of drones with the coverage and performance of satellites. Thales Alenia Space is the prime contractor for Stratobus, an autonomous multi-mission stratospheric airship embodying the missing link between drones and satellites. Designed to undertake regional civil and military telecommunications, navigation, and Earth observation missions, the Stratobus airship operates at an altitude of 20 kilometers — safely above regular air traffic and jet streams. There are many applications enabled by Stratobus, including environmental monitoring, broadband and 5G telecommunications, border and maritime surveillance, monitoring of high-value sites, and many more. Powered by solar energy, it can perform extended missions of up to a year above any kind of zone such as seas, deserts, mountains, or rainforests without any need for local ground infrastructure. It features numerous breakthrough technologies including a highly resistant envelope material, lightweight solar arrays and batteries, and a specific flight management system, to name a few. The airship doesn't require any launcher. It could meet the requirements of armed forces and civil security agencies, for instance by providing constant surveillance of a predefined regional coverage zone. Stratobus is part of the French MoD's strategy for very high altitude operations. These high-altitude platforms are becoming a real asset in the context of high-intensity conflicts on Europe's doorstep. Our company, together with its partners, is working on the manufacturing of two 60-meter demonstrators that will fly by 2028. The manufacturing and integration of Stratobus will take place at the Istres aerial base 125 (BA 125), with support from local authorities (Région Sud, Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area, city of Istres, BA 125).
