Omar Yaghi – awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry – established a milestone in the development of metal–organic frameworks (MOF) in 1999, when he presented MOF-5 to the world. This material has become a classic in the field. It is an exceptionally spacious and stable molecular construction. Even when empty, it can be heated to 300°C without collapsing. However, what caused many researchers to raise their eyebrows was the enormous area hiding inside the material’s cubic spaces. A couple of grams of MOF-5 holds an area as big as a football pitch. Omar Yaghi laid the final bricks in the foundation of metal–organic frameworks in 2002 and 2003. In two articles, in ‘Science’ and ‘Nature’, he shows that it is possible to modify and change MOFs in a rational manner, giving them different properties. One thing he did was to produce 16 variants of MOF-5, with cavities that were both larger and smaller than those in the original material (see figure). One variant could store huge volumes of methane gas, which Yaghi suggested could be used in RNG-fuelled vehicles. Subsequently, metal–organic frameworks have taken the world by storm. Researchers have developed a molecular kit with a wide range of different pieces that can be used to create new MOFs. These have different shapes and characters, providing incredible potential for the rational – or AI-based – design of MOFs for different purposes. For instance, Yaghi’s research group has harvested water from the desert air of Arizona. During the night, their MOF material captured water vapour from the air. When dawn came and the sun heated the material, they were able to collect the water. The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. [#HamburgScienceSummit2025] How can Europe keep science open to the world while protecting critical technologies and strengthening its scientific sovereignty? 🌍 🎤 This key question was at the heart of the opening panel of the Hamburg Science Summit 2025, where Thierry Coulhon, President of Institut Polytechnique de Paris and board member of Udice - French Research Universities alliance spoke alongside Maria Leptin (European Research Council (ERC)) and Patrick Cramer (Max Planck Society). 💡 In his address, he stressed the importance of scientific activism and outlined three priorities for Europe’s research and innovation agenda: ▪️ Open with safeguards: Europe must remain a magnet for talent and foster #international collaborations, while ensuring reciprocity and putting in place proportionate safeguards to protect strategic knowledge. ▪️ Framework Programme 10 (FP10): The next European R&I programme should combine ambition and clarity, involve universities, keep the ERC at the core of excellence, and reinforce the link between fundamental #research and #industrial applications. This requires increased funding and improved #governance to match Europe’s strategic ambitions. ▪️ Curiosity meets purpose: Breakthrough #innovation and #sustainable solutions depend on free, exploratory research. It describes the theory and the tools used to simulate turbulent combustion.  The course is based on the textbook “Theoretical and numerical combustion” by Poinsot and Veynante (Electronic version here or paper version on Amazon here).  The participation requires two to three hours per week online. No a priori knowledge of combustion is needed but participants should have a minimum experience in fluid mechanics and/or CFD. A live session with all participants will take place at the beginning of the course to get to know each other and another live session will conclude the course to answer questions raised during the six weeks of formation and discuss the last news on hydrogen flames. And what if CO₂ became an ally for an innovative and responsible industry?That's the challenge taken up by Vicat, in partnership with AlgoSource, TotalEnergies and Biologie-Géologie Université de Nantes CNRS, through the #CimentAlgue project. Launched in 2021, this industrial research project recovered CO₂ emissions and waste heat from the Montalieu-Vercieu cement plant to grow microalgae, capable of absorbing up to 10 times more CO₂ than terrestrial plants. 💡 An 800-square metre platform was designed to test several crop technologies (raceway ponds, tubular photobioreactors and thin-layer photobioreactor), heated by heat from the kiln and supplied in CO₂ captured at source. 🎯The goal: to produce up to 1 tonne of dry microalgae per year, while precisely measuring the carbon footprint of this industrial symbiosis.  This project, backed by @ADEME, is fully in line with the principles of the circular economy and reducing carbon footprint. It was a pleasure to meet Professor Emeritus David Bourell from The University of Texas at Austin, a respected pioneer in Additive Manufacturing.
