It was a pleasure to be part of the panel discussion on “Exploring AMR and the Need for Coordinated One Health Responses”, hosted by Kamalkoli (KK) Majumdar from Swasti and Ivanna Bagul from Precision Health Platform. Their thoughtful moderation created the perfect space for real, impactful dialogue. Sharing the panel with Dr. Pankaja Raghav was equally enriching, brought sharp clarity to the systemic gaps and opportunities we must act on. Here are the major takeaways of this conversation: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a full-blown ecosystem challenge. Zoonosis and AMR are deeply intertwined. When antimicrobial-resistant infections start in animals, they don’t stay there. Through food, water, and the environment, they spill over silently into humans, often before symptoms appear and sometimes when pathogens are already superbugs (antimicrobial-resistant) That is why we need to: 1. Conduct survey-based research to engage local communities, understand perceptions, and build awareness on AMR through culturally relevant communication. 2. Introduce activity-based learning on AMR in schools and youth programs. 3. Recognise that animal health is as vital as human and environmental health. 4. Bring in strict Regulatory Compliance in Food Industry similar to the ones that is implemented for every Drug molecule. 🚀 Our new paper just came out in npj Digital Medicine (impact factor >15) — and I could not be more #Proud. 👏 First of all: huge congratulations to Ashkan P. for leading this work, and a heartfelt thank you to all our co-authors 🙏 Grateful to the The MSBase Foundation Foundation for providing access to real-world data and the clinical expertise that made this possible. Your openness to collaborate on cutting-edge tech is invaluable. 💡 Thanks as well to the Vlaams AI Onderzoeksprogramma / Flanders AI Research Program for the impulse funding that got this project off the ground. ✨ What’s it all about? - Federated learning = data partners train AI together without sharing patient data. Only model updates move around, data stays safe. - Personalized federated learning = each site adapts the global model to fit its own patients, making predictions more accurate across diverse settings. 🔬 What we did: - Used MSBase registry data: 26,000+ patients, 283,000+ prediction episodes, 146 centers in 32 countries 🌍 - Predicted 2-year disability progression in multiple sclerosis - Tested federated vs. personalized federated models, including a new architecture: AdaptiveDualBranchNet 📊 Key takeaways: ✅ Personalization matters: personalized FedProx and FedAVG reached ROC AUC ~0.84 and outperformed standard federated models ✅ Centralized vs. federated: personalization helps federated models close the gap with centralized training (and sometimes even beat it) ✅ Heterogeneity is real: country-level results differ, but personalization shines where data is smaller or more imbalanced 🌟 Potential: privacy-preserving collaboration at scale, locally relevant predictions, and faster translation of real-world data into clinical decision support ⚠️ Pitfalls: simulations instead of live deployments, need for calibration and prospective validation, risk of overfitting at smaller sites, open questions on fairness and evaluation standards 🏆 Why this feels special: This is honestly one of the highest-impact papers I’ve ever published, and I’m incredibly proud of the team effort behind it. 📖 Curious?
