They reflected on the impact their mentors have had on their legal careers. Last month, Gillian Lam, our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Partner participated as a panel speaker at a Lunch & Learn event, “Drafting Arbitration Clauses in Hong Kong: What Every Corporate Lawyer Should Know”, co-hosted by Thomson Reuters, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), and the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Hong Kong.   Together with Joanne Lau, Secretary General of HKIAC and other experienced panelists from Thomson Reuters, namely Robert Head (he/him/his) (Director), Rachel Hui (Senior Specialist Legal Editor), and Iris Zhang (Professional Trainer), Gillian shared critical insights on drafting effective arbitration clauses, avoiding the pitfalls of pathological clauses, and navigating complex multi-contract frameworks. A key highlight was the discussion on how poorly drafted clauses can lead to costly disputes, emphasising the need for precision in arbitration agreements. Gillian also led a lively interactive exercise on identifying pathological clauses, which was met with enthusiastic participation from the audience and a standout moment. The discussions further highlighted Hong Kong’s distinctive strengths as a leading global arbitration seat.   Gillian and her co-panelists also explored the transformative impact of artificial intelligence and legal technology on arbitration practice, showcasing how these tools enhance research efficiency, streamline data management, and deliver innovative solutions while upholding accuracy and confidentiality.   The event provided a valuable opportunity for Gillian to meet and reconnect with in-house counsel and members of the ACC, fostering meaningful professional connections.   We celebrate Gillian’s thought leadership and dedication to advancing best practices in arbitration. James Grandolfo, partner at Milbank and managing partner of Milbank (Hong Kong), co-chaired the 9th edition of Practising Law Institute's Annual Institute on Corporate & Securities Law in Asia on September 25-26. James, who has acted as co-chair since the inception of the institute, also moderated a session titled "US Regulatory Developments Impacting Asia,” which covered various regulatory developments from the SEC.   Davide Mencacci, head of Milbank's Leveraged Finance practice in Asia, also moderated a session titled "Financing Mergers & Acquisitions in Asia."
