Sompo Holdings has announced that a wholly owned subsidiary of Sompo International Holdings will acquire 100 per cent of the issued Class A ordinary shares of Aspen Insurance Group Holdings Limited for $37.50 per share in cash. Mikio Okumura, CEO of Sompo Group, described the deal as an important milestone in advancing the company’s purpose of “Connect and Be Connected.” He emphasised the role of Sompo P&C, led by James Shea, in promoting capital circulation management and collaboration across the group. The life insurance industry faces complex challenges that demand actuarial expertise. As highlighted in Martin Considine's article, three issues dominated discussions at our recent Appointed Actuaries Forum. • IDII sustainability remains elusive. Despite extensive work by the Contract Terms Working Group, no solution has yet earned the "green light" under customer-centricity principles. The search continues for an approach that maintains insurable interest whilst delivering sustainable premiums. • Financial advice reform is gaining momentum. The Help, Guidance and Advice framework under DBFO could transform outcomes for the 85% of Australians currently without advice. However, guidance appears underdeveloped, and superannuation funds hold the key to success. • Genetics regulation brings new complexities. The Government's total ban on using adverse genetic testing results will reshape underwriting practices. The real question now is how we measure effectiveness when the ban limits data collection for future reviews. While many people know Switzerland as a safe haven in times of crisis, Swiss Re's home country is nonetheless exposed to numerous natural perils like flooding that in recent years has intensified with a warming climate. So as part of Swiss Re's participation in Swiss {ai} Weeks, an initiative uniting stakeholders from across Swiss business, government and academia to shape the responsible development and application of AI, it made sense for us to develop a #hackathon challenge that called for using data and technology for solutions that could make Swiss society more resilient to extreme weather events. We were impressed by what emerged: one team turned to virtual reality to help visualise extreme weather scenarios; another group developed a dashboard to provide intuitive information about flood risk in different regions; still another produced an AI-driven tool capable of providing alerts about accelerating Alpine landslide risks as well as formulating evacuation plans to help guide authorities' disaster responses. What united these projects was a sense of urgency: in 48 hours, the teams deployed technology to harness sophisticated data sources, delivering user interfaces to test the viability of their ideas in bolstering Switzerland's NatCat #resilience. We at Swiss Re congratulate our hackathon teams for their innovative approaches to challenges not unlike those that our risk experts in 70 countries around the world work on every day. One thing is clear: every reinsurance and insurance problem has a data component. With much of this data unstructured and difficult for us humans to get our hands around, Swiss Re is increasingly using #GenAI and other sophisticated methods to turn it into valuable, actionable assets – for our own underwriters and claims handlers, but also to help our clients make better risk decisions and strengthen their businesses. The future of data-driven insurance and reinsurance is being transformed by AI, and #SwissRe is helping shape it. This is also one reason we see real value in collaborative, high-energy coding marathons like the Swiss {ai} Weeks hackathon: these events – and the talented young minds participating in them – inspire us and open our eyes to fresh ways of applying technology to address real-world challenges.
