Founded after the Great Tsunami of 2004 and registered as a NGO in Sri Lanka, a Charitable Trust in Hong Kong and a Charity in the UK, SRI's initial mission was to dispense aid to Tsunami-affected areas, but over time this has evolved into the provision of long-term educational resources and opportunities for disadvantaged children as well as environmental campaigns. Jackie Horne, a friend of 20 years, has been the driving force behind this clean and nimble charity.

Hong Kong is steadily building the foundations of a new role: a hub for impact capital in Asia. At the AVPN Global Summit, I moderated a brilliant conversation with Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services in Hong Kong SAR; Lester Huang, Deputy Chair of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Asia’s largest charitable donor; and Tracy Palandjian, CEO of Social Finance, on what it takes to turn a world-class financial centre into an engine for social change. We explored the blueprint for an impact hub — the policy architecture, catalytic capital, and partnerships that connect global finance to local priorities. My takeaway: with the right ambition, this is a moment to design something distinctive — Hong Kong’s own model for the impact economy, one that mobilises Asia’s vast pools of capital and serves the needs and energy of over half the world’s population. We’ll be deepening this work with a new Marshall Institute – Institute of Philanthropy research project on the evolving role of philanthropy in global financial hubs, starting right here in Hong Kong. #impacteconomy #philanthropy

This dispatch, rooted in interviews conducted in New York and anchored by a survey of relevant literature, traces that shift. Those who once dismissed ESG as stakeholder capitalism unmoored from financial returns may, by next year, re-emerge with a new slogan in hand—“impact”—as the next marketing hook for investment trusts. Yet genuine impact funds already exist. Japan’s Mizuho Bank has signed a strategic partnership with Malaysia’s Iskandar Regional Development Authority to boost project financing and attract investors to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
