Some Fine Gael personnel at Leinster House were predicting yesterday that presidential candidate Catherine Connolly could get 70pc of the total valid poll when the ballots are counted on Saturday. Some Fianna Fáil backbenchers were of the same opinion. One prominent Fine Gael member said: “This was always an uphill struggle. We lost our candidate in August. We lost our source of transfers. And we were one party against five.” A number of party members made a point about fighting “the richest party in the country”, meaning Sinn Féin. Repeated mention was made of Sinn Féin’s social media experience, deep reach and ability to “amplify” Ms Connolly. There was also criticism of former minister Ivan Yates’ comments predicting a smear campaign against Ms Connolly. “He spancelled us,” one source said. But in their final analysis, most coalesced around a single idea: There are myriad reasons not to vote for a government candidate. Seasoned campaigners insisted any comment would be premature and refused to accept that the Independent candidate is already home and hosed. It is still all to play for, they said.
