HSE Research & Development (R&D) in partnership with the Irish Platform for Patient Organisations, Science, and Industry (IPPOSI), the National Office for Research Ethics Committees, academic and patient partners, have co-developed and launched a new online course dedicated to the ethical conduct of health and social care research. The course makes research ethics clear, and accessible, with no research background needed. 🧑‍🔬🔬 Ireland’s most ambitious cancer research collaboration, Precision Oncology Ireland, has entered its second phase, marking a major step forward in the development of next-generation personalised cancer care. Coordinated by Systems Biology Ireland (SBI) at University College Dublin and led by its Director, Professor Walter Kolch, POI-2 brings together five Irish universities, six cancer research charities, and seven international industry partners in a strategic partnership aimed at transforming how cancer is diagnosed and treated in Ireland. The mission of POI is to develop tailored diagnostic and therapeutic solutions using cutting-edge technologies and data, ensuring every patient receives the right treatment at the right time. This new phase of the programme will focus on expanding scientific scope and infrastructure, strengthening clinical engagement, enhancing patient and public involvement, and providing new training opportunities for the next generation of cancer researchers. “Research is the engine behind new medicines,” said Professor Kolch. “POI-2 is all about linking top-notch cancer research to clinical translation. "This includes the development of advanced computer simulations of the disease, so that we can design the best diagnostic and treatment approaches for each individual patient.” The POI-2 programme is co-funded by Research Ireland and industry and non-profit partners, including the Irish Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Ireland, and the Children's Health Foundation.

We are delighted to welcome planning approval for the development of a new School of Medicine Building. The new facility will complement the ongoing expansion of courses in our University of Galway - College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences which includes the first intake of pharmacy students on the MPharm this September and the planned Graduate Entry Medicine programme due to begin in September 2027. The new facility is to be built on our south campus, a short distance from the Quadrangle. The building design runs over four storeys, covering approximately 3,925sq metres, and is integrated, via a glazed atrium link, with the existing Block E building, a protected structure of historical and architectural significance. It will offer state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research, including tutorial, seminar and meeting rooms, study spaces and collaboration areas, advanced research laboratories and administration offices. As part of the University’s broader sustainability goals, the design includes plant systems and solar PV panels to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. 🌍♻️ New Research from Cancer Trials Ireland Our CEO, Angela Clayton-Lea , together with Clinical Lead Prof Seamus O’Reilly and colleagues, has published Ireland’s first national assessment of sustainability awareness and practices in cancer clinical trials. The study highlights both the challenges and opportunities for reducing the carbon footprint of cancer research, from trial-related travel to waste reduction, and shows there is strong enthusiasm within the Irish research community to make trials greener.
