From the first call on Vodafone’s network 40 years ago to today’s 5G Standalone (5GSA) infrastructure, we’ve come a long way.   5GSA is a major leap forward. On a dedicated network, built from the ground-up for 5G, it delivers faster speeds, lower latency, and smarter energy use. And it’s not just about better streaming - it’s about enabling real-time innovation.   For businesses, network slicing is a great example of what 5GSA can do. This technology enables organisations to carve out their own private lane on the network, tailored to their specific needs. At Glastonbury, @VodafoneThree used network slicing to connect 102 payment machines across three bars, enabling up to two transactions per minute. This led to seamless payment operations and allowed festival-goers to enjoy more of their favourite artists without having to wait in long queues.   We’re investing in our networks to bring 5GSA to more of our customers across Europe in the months and years ahead. The truth is: you can only be in the business your OSS/BSS lets you be in. This is especially true for 5G. A cornerstone of OSS/BSS is monetization, the process by which service providers turn their networks and services into revenue. In the past, revenue came from calls, SMS and monthly plans. Today, the landscape is far more dynamic. Service providers sell extra data packages, enable immersive video streaming, enable mobile payments, offer cloud storage and connect smart devices, like watches and cars, to the internet. Nokia Q2 2025 Earnings Are Out – Cloud & Network Services Had 14% YoY Growth Net Sales: +2% YoY reported growth, supported by the Infinera acquisition; -1% on a comparable basis due to FX headwinds and Mobile Networks decline. Mobile Networks: –13% YoY due to one-time revenue benefit in Q2 2024. Network Infrastructure: +8% YoY with growth across all business units. Cloud and Network Services (CNS): +14% YoY driven by strength in Core Networks and strong margin improvement – a standout performer this quarter. William has a 35-year career in the telecom industry as a board member & strategist. - The book explains why many of the promised breakthroughs were unlikely to materialize. - The book challenged the need for higher speeds and greater capacity, arguing that 4G was already sufficient and that user demand for mobile data would be flat by 2027. - He also explains that at least in the developed world, we already have the telecoms connectivity we need. Fixed and mobile networks are sufficiently fast, and data usage is no longer rising rapidly. - Back in 2023, organizations were expecting a constant increase in user data, but this proved wrong in contrast to actual usage data today, after analyzing decades of trends However, some critics remained unconvinced.
