From Morphology to Morphometry: A huge congratulations to Ben-Zion Katz, Laboratory Director, from Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and his co-authors, on the publication of this landmark study in the esteemed British Journal of Hematology. They present a novel five-layer analytical approach that enables high resolution, large-field digital imaging, data mining and analysis of blood specimens and term it "next-generation morphology (NGM)" or "morphometry". The study shows how moving from Morphology to Morphometry can uncover subtle, quantifiable differences in red cell size/shape and neutrophil granularity in MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndromes), patterns invisible with conventional approaches. By analyzing more cells and applying advanced AI algorithms, these differences become measurable and reproducible, opening the door to new diagnostic insights, earlier detection, and potential biomarkers that can improve patient care. This year at ADLM things got a little sweeter 🍬 We brought over 57 kilos (125 lbs) of jelly beans, filling hundreds of mini tubes for visitors and one giant showpiece tube for our Celly Jelly Challenge. 177 attendees joined in, putting their best guesses on the total number of beans, and how many purple ones were hidden inside. Today we announced the unveiling of hematology’s most important innovation in decades: Complete Blood Morphology (CBM®), which will usher in a new era of lab automation, addressing the global laboratory staffing crisis and accelerating lab workflows and efficiencies. Operating downstream from the CBC analyzer, the CBM Analyzer closes the last manual gap in the hematology lab. Soon, every routine peripheral blood smear analysis will be autonomous, quantitative and standardized—with no human in the loop. It's powered by Scopio’s Full-Field technology to enable analysis of 10x more cells, from scan to final report. And it will provide greater diagnostic insights than ever before.
