MetalBear, an Israeli startup that created the open-source Kubernetes tool mirrord, has raised $12.5 million in Seed funding. The company aims to solve a major challenge in software development: testing code in realistic cloud environments. An interview with Prof. Noam Koenigstein from Tel Aviv University, an expert in recommender systems and former lead researcher of the Xbox recommendation team at Microsoft. From the classic division between collaborative filtering and content-based systems to hybrid approaches and the shift to embeddings and matrix factorization, Noam explains the evolution of algorithms, the differences between explicit and implicit feedback, and the challenges of choosing model dimensions. He also emphasizes the gap between performance on offline test sets and real-world outcomes, and the need to understand causality rather than just correlations. We discussed the differences between algorithms such as bandits, the use of organic feedback, and the difficulty of off-policy evaluation while balancing bias and variance. Prof. Koenigstein shares real-world applications in music and movies, their differences, and the importance of explainability (XAI) in addressing issues like filter bubbles. Finally, he points to his vision of advancing the recommender systems community in Israel and strengthening the connection between academia and industry.
