MetalBear, an Israeli startup that created the open-source Kubernetes tool mirrord, has raised $12.5 million in Seed funding. The company aims to solve a major challenge in software development: testing code in realistic cloud environments. The funding round was led by TLV Partners and included investments from TQ Ventures, MTF, Netz Capital, and angel investors such as Sentry co-founder David Cramer and OpenTelemetry co-creator Ben Sigelman. The key takeaway was that deep-tech innovation succeeds through long-term commitment rather than short-term wins. A second panel focused on startups from Tier 2 and 3 cities. Leaders from T-Hub, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, CIE IIIT Hyderabad, and ASPIRE BioNEST highlighted that quality innovation exists across India, but it needs structured support to scale effectively. More than 30 curated startups #pitched for up to ₹30 lakh in grants and ₹2 crore in strategic investments, aiming to transition their technologies from lab to market. 𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐈.   That’s the bold perspective from our own Eyal Niv, Managing Partner at Pitango First, in CTech by Calcalist’s VC AI Survey.   Israel is already active across the entire AI stack, from infrastructure to applications, and has the talent, vision, and ambition to lead globally. An interview with Prof. Noam Koenigstein from Tel Aviv University, an expert in recommender systems and former lead researcher of the Xbox recommendation team at Microsoft. From the classic division between collaborative filtering and content-based systems to hybrid approaches and the shift to embeddings and matrix factorization, Noam explains the evolution of algorithms, the differences between explicit and implicit feedback, and the challenges of choosing model dimensions. He also emphasizes the gap between performance on offline test sets and real-world outcomes, and the need to understand causality rather than just correlations. We discussed the differences between algorithms such as bandits, the use of organic feedback, and the difficulty of off-policy evaluation while balancing bias and variance. Prof. Koenigstein shares real-world applications in music and movies, their differences, and the importance of explainability (XAI) in addressing issues like filter bubbles. Finally, he points to his vision of advancing the recommender systems community in Israel and strengthening the connection between academia and industry.
