  • Decentralized autonomous organizations: The new global digital venture capital

Research in International Business and Finance

What makes a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO)-based venture capital (VC) whitepaper trustworthy? We conducted a content analysis of 10 prominent DAO VC whitepapers to identify the relevant components that promote investors’ trust. Our findings show that there are 10 key components that can do so: registration, permissioned access, token-based voting, staking, separation of strategic and operational votes, duration of dynamic voting, adaptive quorum systems, "rage quit" mechanisms…

What makes a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO)-based venture capital (VC) whitepaper trustworthy? We conducted a content analysis of 10 prominent DAO VC whitepapers to identify the relevant components that promote investors’ trust. Our findings show that there are 10 key components that can do so: registration, permissioned access, token-based voting, staking, separation of strategic and operational votes, duration of dynamic voting, adaptive quorum systems, "rage quit" mechanisms, organizational support structures, and comprehensive whitepaper sections. Our findings make two contributions to VC studies. First, we illuminate how blockchain technology fosters trust within the investment ecosystem, potentially mitigating the information asymmetries and opportunistic behavior prevalent in traditional VC settings. Second, we highlight the potential of blockchain-based DAO VCs to democratize access to capital and address resource imbalances. Hence, the availability of a clear, informative whitepaper plays an important role in improving the DAO VCs’ transparency, increasing access to the resources needed for informed decision-making, and improving the trust of prospective investors in this new investment vehicle.

  • New pathways for international business governance via blockchain-based decentralized autonomous organizations

    Multinational Business Review

Our study highlights that Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) present significant potential to reshape governance in international business (IB) by introducing non-hierarchical, peer-to-peer decision-making models. Through a bibliometric analysis of 73 papers and qualitative content analysis of academic literature and whitepapers, we identified four key research streams in the DAO literature, emphasizing their ability to generate new research questions in IB governance. A detailed examination of financial DAOs (DeFi DAOs) revealed unique governance mechanisms that challenge traditional multinational corporation (MNC) structures and offer insights for future IB strategies. While DAOs provide promising governance solutions, their long-term sustainability requires further research as regulatory, economic, and technological environments evolve. Our findings highlight DAOs’ potential to influence IB governance at the macro (country), meso (MNC/firm), and micro (team/individual) levels, presenting new pathways for decentralized governance in global business.

  • Predictors of NFT prices: An Automated Machine Learning

    Journal of Global Information Management

This article aims to broaden the understanding of the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) pricing determinants by investigating features, both market- and network-related aspects. This article aims to broaden the understanding of the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) pricing determinants by investigating features, both market- and network-related aspects. NFTs are uniquely identifiable digital assets stored on the blockchain. Ownership is assigned through smart contracts and can be transferred or resold by the owner. The authors analyzed a comprehensive dataset from Signex.io with over 19,183 datapoints on NFT prices and NFT social communities using automated machine learning (AML), a suitable technique to investigate the most impactful factors due to a lack of knowledge on the exact determinants. Findings show that network factors are the most important
pricing determinants: Twitter members followed by Discord members. Online communities drive the
price of NFTs, but not in a linear fashion. Given the newness of the phenomenon and no agreed upon pricing models, this article contributes by using AML to discover the most relevant determinants of non-fungible tokens (NFT) prices.

  • Risk substitution in cryptocurrencies: Evidence from BRICS announcements

    Emerging Markets Review

We investigate the impact of BRICS regulatory announcements on cryptocurrency volatilities and returns. We investigate the impact of BRICS regulatory announcements on cryptocurrency volatilities and returns. Results evidence risk substitutions after announcements moving from ETH, XRP and LTC to BTC and vice versa, with BTC having volatility reactions to regulatory announcements that differ from those of other cryptocurrencies. Bootstrap quantile regression indicates a stronger detrimental impact of announcements when BTC is currently manifesting lower volatility and higher daily returns. Robustness checks confirm our findings, as well as evidence that the cryptocurrencies in our sample are considerably more reactive to BRICS announcements than US Fed announcements.

  • In China? Pick Your Brand Name Carefully

    Harvard Business Review

Companies moving into new markets often bring unfortunate names with them. Distributors in Chile asked Mazda to rename its Laputa minivan because “puta” means “prostitute” in Spanish. Clairol introduced the Mist Stick curling iron in Germany only to learn that there, “mist” is slang for “manure.”

Choosing a name when taking a product to China is the biggest challenge of all. Chinese has thousands of characters, each with many meanings and with pronunciations that vary from region to region. In the early days of Coke’s introduction in China, for example, shopkeepers advertised the drink using characters that sounded similar to “Coca-Cola” but had nonsensical meanings such as “wax-flattened mare.”

To help companies avoid having their brands associated with strange images or messages, we used our research on 100 multinational brands to develop a naming framework that takes into account both meaning and sound. Companies can take one of four tacks, each with its pros and cons. Ideally the Chinese name would have both phonetic and semantic associations with the original—but fewer than a quarter of the companies we studied achieved this branding nirvana.

Distinguished authors from across the world make a contribution to the growing literature on Outward FDI (OFDI) from China, offering a wide range of up-to-date academic insights and findings. Those findings are rounded off with lessons learned from historical developments (success and failure stories), an evaluation of current trends and the motives and modes of entry that Chinese companies use. Contributions on OFDI from China in different regions of the world and specific industry studies, case studies and theoretical contributions highlight the need for additional research on this emergent area in international business.
