🚀 VMware → OpenShift Virtualization: Lessons from the Field We’re currently helping a large bank migrate workloads from a massive VMware environment to OpenShift Virtualization and it’s been an eye-opener. There’s no doubt VMware has been the gold standard for virtualization for decades rock-solid hypervisor, mature tooling, and deep enterprise roots. But after the Broadcom acquisition, the narrative has shifted. Licensing, uncertainty, and long-term roadmap questions are pushing many to explore alternatives built on open technologies. So far, here’s what we’ve learned: ✅ The biggest challenge isn’t technical it’s mindset. Teams are used to managing VMs like static pets; moving to Kubernetes-native virtualization means treating them like cattle, integrated into pipelines, GitOps, and policies. ✅ Storage and networking design matter more than ever you can’t just “lift and shift.” We’ve seen how tuning ODF (OpenShift Data Foundation) and leveraging proper network attachment definitions for isolation make or break performance. ✅ Observability and Day-2 operations must evolve; operators, monitoring, and automation now need to handle both VMs and containers side by side. And now... More "manage from the cloud" goodness! :) Two weeks ago, we introduced the ability to convert on-premises groups to be cloud managed and now, in collaboration with our colleagues in Exchange we are releasing the ability to manage the *e-mail* properties of a hybrid user that originates from on-premises, in the cloud. This means you no longer have to manage email attributes like proxyAddresses using on premises tools and commands and wait for them to sync. The majority of enterprise customers use Exchange Online for collaboration, yet those who have AD always had to keep around a couple on Exchange servers to manage those attributes. This gets us closer to not needing them (there are still other use cases for them). Less on-premises infrastructure to rely on... In AKS, Namespaces provide you a logical isolation boundary for workloads and resources. This helps simplify resource isolation, multi-tenancy and scaling. We recently released a preview of Managed Namespaces that help you simplify namespace management. Here is a how-to blog on using the Argo CD Agent 0.4.1 with the OpenShift GitOps 1.18 operator for OpenShift users that want to try it out. As a reminder the Argo CD Agent is Technical Preview and not intended for Production workloads. However for customers interested in using it in the future it is well worth checking out now in a lab environment and providing feedback. As someone who has been running kagent kmcp kgateway and agentgateway lately, I’ve found that they complement each other really well: - kmcp → makes it easy to create and deploy MCP servers in Kubernetes ⚙️ - kagent → lets you build, run, and share agents declaratively in Kubernetes 🤖 - agentgateway → an agentic proxy for MCP and A2A, with support for LLMs, inference gateways, and even classic microservices 🔗 - kgateway → a Kubernetes-native API gateway that supports two data planes: Envoy and agentgateway 🚪 Let me know if you have any questions!
