Deepening EU–India Digital Cooperation: Inaugural Think Tank Workshop The EU–India digital collaboration has entered a new phase with the launch of the EU International Digital Strategy and the Joint Communication on a New Strategic EU–India Agenda. In this context, the EU-India Digital Policy Dialogue has taken the first step toward strengthening research engagement between Europe and India. On 1 October in Brussels, we convened the inaugural Think Tank Workshop, bringing together European and Indian research institutions alongside EU policymakers from DG CNECT and the European External Action Service (EEAS). Under the umbrella of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC), participants: • Shared insights from ongoing research • Identified gaps in EU–India digital cooperation • Laid the groundwork for structured collaboration throughout 2025–2026 The workshop focused on TTC Working Group 1’s six priority themes, emphasizing how research can support informed policymaking and address blind spots in the digital partnership. Our participant think tank Bertelsmann Stiftung, expressed interest to develop a joint paper on the EU-India collaboration, in conjunction with ongoing discussions with policymakers. This inaugural session marks the beginning of sustained, multi-stakeholder engagement, reinforcing our commitment to inclusive, evidence-driven collaboration in shaping the future of the EU–India digital agenda. Are you a researcher or think tank based in India or Europe working on #DPI, #AI, or #emergingtechnologies with a focus on the #EU–India context? We’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to our team members Tanea Bandyopadhyay or Lars Radscheidt to explore opportunities for collaboration. #InThePress 📰 Astha, Bapu Vaitla and Deepali Khanna speak to Hindustan Times on Reclaiming power in the digital economy. 🔗 Read here: https://lnkd.in/g3AH7BvX Over the last few years, we have been working with our friends at Data2X, supported by The Rockefeller Foundation, to both facilitate the creation of new cooperatives, as well as work with existing cooperatives to help them pool data and collectively steward it across the globe. This is even more significant given that the United Nations has designated 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, with the theme "Cooperatives Build a Better World". 👉🏽 The lesson is simple: Bottom up data governance point to how communities are coming together, to renegotiate power for more organised collective bargaining. 📨 We will also be spotlighting our work on data cooperatives paving the way for gender-centric climate action in our newsletter this month! Stay tuned.

#InThePress 📰 This week, Sarayu spoke to Hindustan Times for their article, "How IIT-M scientists are evaluating AI’s ‘bias’ through an Indian lens." She highlighted the need to address biases in datasets and emphasised that the making of AI itself is a deeply human process. ❗ How should AI labour change? ✨ We are excited to announce the third and final virtual discussion in Aapti Institute and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH’s stakeholder consultation series! Here's a quick recap: The first discussion focused on Africa, and the second on Southeast Asia. We will conclude this series with a discussion on #SouthAsia. The region harbours a growing workforce of young people, an expanding platform economy, and has a history of servicing outsourcing and global supply chain needs. With the ongoing expansion of artificial intelligence and online platforms, outsourced data work and content moderation are an increasingly urgent labour issue. 🌏 This discussion will look at #datawork and #contentmoderation in South Asia, and draw comparisons with sectors like location-based platform work. This gathering will seek to convene people from labour, research, advocacy, and policy to map and address the challenges affecting workers. 📅 Date: Thursday, 30th October, 2025 🕜 Time: 1:30 PM IST | 9 AM CEST 🖱️ Register Here: https://lnkd.in/gwVXkUSJ 📖 Read about our project Exploring AI Labour in the Global South: https://lnkd.in/gz2pbKjv 🌍 Snapshots from our discussion on Africa: https://lnkd.in/gWvx33bH 🌏 Snapshots from our discussion on Southeast Asia: https://lnkd.in/gYnAfFNj Sarayu Natarajan, Priyam Vadaliya, Ritvik Gupta, Nighat, Sreya Nair, Lukas Sonnenberg, Maren Bernlöhr, María Paula Piñeros Martínez

Did you know that South Africa has one of the most progressive refugee laws in the world? 💡 After our #MigTech fieldwork in the Philippines, we're expanding our #DataOnTheMove project to analyse data flows within other South-South migrations like in South Africa — a country with one of the most layered and complex migration landscapes in the world. Poorvi and Antara were in Johannesburg and Cape Town last month. Watch this video to know what they were upto! 🤔 To know more about our #DataOnTheMove project, click here: https://lnkd.in/g_MjRsPZ

Back home after an inspiring few days in Jakarta at #AsiaXchange2025, hosted by The Rockefeller Foundation. It was great to reconnect with friends and collaborators working at the intersection of data, AI, and climate resilience across Asia. What stood out to me, including in the excellent session by CivicDataLab , was the need to build resilient climate and data systems that strengthen sovereignty for the region, countries, and communities. The tension between AI’s promise of efficiency and the realities of local context is real. Yes, we need more and better climate data but we also need to ask: who holds agency, and who benefits? How do we ensure that public data doesn’t simply reinforce private power? At Aapti Institute , we see bottom-up data governance as the bridge, making data systems not just technically strong, but socially legitimate. Unlocking data is only part of the work; real impact comes when communities can use it with agency and accountability and sometimes, that means saying no to the constant extraction of data. Our work with Data2X is focused on building gender focused bottom up data sovereignty in Asia! Thank you Deepali Khanna Charu Chadha Anna Rego and the rest of the brilliant Rockefeller Asia team for having us. Excited to have learnt so much, and met incredible people including the #bigbetfellows! Vinay Narayan Sushmitha Viswanathan Sameer Bajaj Elizabeth H. Neeraj Jain Gaurav Godhwani Ayu Ariyanti

🆕 Aapti Institute is pleased to partner with Sigla Research Center and Tech Global Institute to form ATLAS: Alliance for Tech Labor across the South. ATLAS will act as a research initiative that focuses on digital labour issues in Asia.📍 🌐 This network seeks to study and support complex domestic landscapes of digital platform labour in Asia, focusing on content moderation and data work. Our efforts will focus on assessing the needs of worker communities and organisations, and supplying research, advocacy tools, and best practices to support their movements. 🤝🏽 Our collaboration aims to share and explore inclusive, robust, and participative labour policies and frameworks for labour platforms. Starting with the Philippines and India, we will develop ideas and outcomes that can be useful to digital labour ecosystems in other parts of the world. 📩 Please write to us at [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected] for queries, concerns, or collaboration requests. Stay tuned for more information! 🪩 Disha Verma, Prateek Waghre, Sabhanaz Rashid Diya, Rossine Fallorina, Neen Sapalo, Juan Gabriel Felix, Sarayu Natarajan, Priyam Vadaliya, Nighat, Ritvik Gupta
