About us
Action for Autism (AFA) was started in 1991 to provide support and services to persons with autism and their families, and to create an environment in India in which people with ASD are able to grow to their full potential. The AFA National Centre was established in 2004 to expand these services. AFA started as a parent support group, with a focus on raising awareness about autism in India. It now runs multiple services which are comprehensive, encompassing individuals across age groups (from very young children to adolescents to adults with autism) and across the spectrum of abilities (spanning those with very high to lower support needs). The AFA services accommodate for individual requirements, including those of people in a mainstream environment, a specialized one or even if the person primarily stays at home. In addition our programs take into consideration the particular needs and constraints of the families of the individuals. The services are geared towards both families who can attend the programs on a regular basis and for those who can access services intermittently - for example, those who live in far flung areas of Delhi or in other parts of the country. All the AFA services are designed with a solid understanding of autism, one that keeps pace with the evolving nature of the same worldwide. The services incorporate internationally recognized ‘best practices’ which are also often modified and adapted to suit the Indian context. And, the central goal that prevails in each of the services offered is to help the person with autism lead a productive, dignified and happy life.

Today, we ran for autism! 💙 Team Action For Autism proudly took part in the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2025 in the Champions with Disability category. It was an incredible morning — our participants, families, and supporters came together full of energy and excitement. Some ran, some walked— everyone moved forward together, celebrating inclusion and community spirit. For us, this wasn’t just a run. It was a way to show that autistic people belong everywhere — in schools, workplaces, and yes, on the race track too. We’re so proud of our champions who showed up, gave their best, and had fun doing it! Here’s to more runs, more awareness, and more acceptance. 💙 #RunForAutism #DelhiHalfMarathon #ChampionsWithDisability #ActionForAutism #InclusionInAction #AutismAwareness

#Structure brings clarity and clarity builds confidence. At AFA, we often use visuals and structured supports to help autistic individuals navigate daily life with greater independence. Something as simple as a #shopping trip can become a meaningful learning experience. Before heading to the store, our trainees create a visual shopping list which is a structured guide that helps them plan what they need to buy. At the store, they follow the list, locate items, and practice using the cash counter to make payments. Each step, from choosing an item to handing over money, strengthens everyday life skills like decision-making, sequencing, money management and social interaction. These small steps toward independence are built on structure, support, and self-belief, the cornerstones of learning at AFA. #Autism #Inclusion #LifeSkills #Neurodiversity #ActionForAutism #LearningForIndependence #VisualSupports #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance

Music and music therapy provide many benefits to autistic individuals. Some of these benefits may include improved social interaction, communication skills, emotional regulation and sensory processing by providing a common ground for connection and #expression. Research has found that engaging in musical activities can stimulate brain development, enhance focus, reduce #anxiety and promote positive experiences like #creativity and self-esteem. It can help autistic individuals feel more comfortable in group settings as well. At AFA, music sessions are designed keeping in mind the needs of the individuals and their strengths. Through structured rhythm exercises, movement to music, and improvisation, participants develop #focus, joint attention and social reciprocity. #Music #MusicSession #Rhythm #Beats #Communication #SensoryProcessing #Autism #AutismSpectrum #AutismAndMusic #ActionForAutism

A day of care at AFA! Today, Action For Autism, Jasola Vihar hosted a medical camp for our individuals, parents, trainees, and staff. The camp provided free consultations and basic medicines to support the health and wellbeing of our community. We are grateful to Dr. Ashish Sabharwal (General Physician), Dr. Sthitodhi Mukherjee (Dentist), Dr. Chandana Shekhar (Gynecologist), and Akshat (Pharmacist) for their time, expertise and compassion. Small steps like these help ensure that those who care for others and those who inspire us every day also receive the care they deserve. #ActionForAutism #AFA #CommunityCare #InclusionInAction #HealthAndWellbeing #AutismSupport #AccessibleHealthcare #Neurodiversity #MedicalCamp #AutismIndia
