Cyber News!!! The Indian Navy recently convened a high-level seminar titled “Impact of Cyber Attacks on Maritime Sector and Its Effects on National Security and International Relations” at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. The event aimed to deepen stakeholder understanding of cyber threats in the maritime domain and foster collaboration to strengthen India’s national cybersecurity posture. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi emphasized that maritime security is central to India’s economic and strategic ambitions. Under the vision of Samudra se Samriddhi, India’s maritime growth is being shaped by initiatives such as Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, Sagarmala, and PM Gati Shakti. He called for cybersecurity to be embedded at the design stage of all maritime systems and stressed the need for real-time information sharing and inter-agency coordination. Union Minister of State for Electronics & IT and Commerce, Jitin Prasada, delivered the keynote address, advocating for the maritime sector to be designated as a standalone Critical Information Infrastructure. He underscored the urgency of building a resilient cyber defence posture tailored to maritime operations. A parallel tech exhibition showcased indigenous cybersecurity and defence innovations by Indian startups—reinforcing the nation’s push toward Aatmanirbharta and the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. The seminar addressed vulnerabilities in the maritime digital ecosystem and explored mitigation strategies to secure critical infrastructure. The initiative reflects the Navy’s proactive approach to safeguarding India’s maritime domain in the digital age. Cyber News!!! In what is being termed one of the largest “digital arrest” frauds reported in India, a 72-year-old Mumbai businessman has lost a staggering ₹58 crore to cybercriminals posing as officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to the Maharashtra Cyber Department, the fraud took place between August and October this year. The scammers contacted the businessman, claiming his name had surfaced in a money-laundering investigation. Over several video calls, they convinced him that he and his wife were under “digital arrest,” creating an atmosphere of fear and urgency. Under pressure, the businessman transferred money through multiple RTGS transactions to at least 18 different bank accounts, totaling ₹58 crore. When he later realized he had been duped, he approached the cyber police, who have since arrested three individuals in connection with the case. Authorities have urged citizens to stay cautious and verify any communication claiming to be from law enforcement or government agencies. Cyber experts emphasize that no legitimate agency conducts arrests or investigations over video calls or demands money transfers to “resolve” legal matters. This case serves as a stark reminder of the growing threat of impersonation-based cybercrime in India, where scammers exploit fear and authority to deceive individuals.
