Kubernetes Swap When you deploy a Pod in Kubernetes, each node uses its physical RAM to run containers. If a node runs out of memory, Kubernetes may start killing Pods to keep the node stable. With kubernetes swap, you can avoid this by allowing the node to use a part of its disk as extra virtual memory. Why does a running application suddenly slow down? If there are no code or hardware changes, the slowdown could be due to a page fault What is a page fault? A page fault is an event that happens when a program tries to access data from the RAM, but that data is not there. When this occurs, the operating system pauses the program, locates the required data on the disk, and loads it into RAM. If the RAM is already full, the OS moves some old data from RAM to disk to make space for the new data. Once done, the program continues running. When your system doesn’t have enough memory but you’re running multiple applications, the OS constantly swaps data between memory and disk, and that can slow down your app significantly.
