At IIT Kanpur’s 58th Convocation, Aaryan Srivastava (BS-MS/Physics/2025) was awarded the prestigious P.T. Narasimhan Natural Sciences Prize for being the best graduating student in the natural sciences with the highest cumulative grade point average. From earning 4 academic excellence awards at IIT Kanpur and the INSPIRE Scholarship from the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India, to conducting research at the Australian National University (ANU) under the Future Research Talent Awards, Aaryan’s journey reflects perseverance, curiosity, and a passion for uncovering the mysteries of physics. In his own words, this prize has not only brought him pride and fulfillment but also reinforced his commitment to pursue higher studies and inspire future generations of students. With deep sorrow, we mourn the loss of our esteemed alumnus, Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya (MT/CSE/1986)—a visionary in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing, and one of India’s most respected academic leaders. Prof. Bhattacharyya was serving as the Chairman of the Reserve Bank of India’s high-level committee to develop the framework for Responsible and Ethical AI (FREE-AI) in the financial sector. He was also a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay and had earlier served as the Director of IIT Patna. A pioneering researcher in machine translation, semantics, and multilingual NLP, Prof. Bhattacharyya’s contributions—including the creation of IndoWordNet—transformed the landscape of language technology in India. Beyond his scholarly brilliance, he was deeply admired for his humility, mentorship, and dedication to nurturing young minds. His legacy of innovation, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire generations to come. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and students. Om Shanti.
