Aarti Mohan, Co-Founder and Partner, led a workshop on The Business Case for Social Procurement at #SUTRA2025 last week, using real-world examples to demonstrate how businesses can integrate social enterprises into mainstream value chains and how social procurement can be a lever for inclusive and sustainable sourcing. 💡 Key takeaways from the discussion: Core procurement from communities is a significant aspect of inclusive procurement. 🔹 Inclusive Procurement Matters: Corporates are aligning purpose with CSR within their industries. 51% of companies disclose scope 3 emissions even though it's not mandated, and 60% of supply chain disruptions are due to social and environmental factors. India is one of the largest public procurement countries, with a market of 40,000 crore. 🔹 On the supply side, India has many Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and growing women-led enterprises. Platforms and micro-marketplaces can bridge suppliers and buyers to meet the growing demand for climate-smart organic produce and fair trade produce. 🔹 On the demand side, both direct and indirect spending are occurring, with increased prioritisation of green logistics and inclusive transport. The workshop highlighted existing barriers and possible solutions to achieving inclusive procurement: 🔹 When designing FPOs, enhancing governance and qualification, capacity building within the value chain, procurement, and active member participation could improve their adoption. 🔹 Improved value chain traceability, transparency systems, and standard metrics need to be identified to track sustainability. 🔹 To improve consumer awareness, we need systems to track suppliers, certifications and labelling, and industry associations pooling resources to promote inclusive procurement. The categorisation of areas from 'Safe' to 'Over-exploited' is based on groundwater extraction relative to available resources. According to the Central Ground Water Board: - Safe blocks have an extraction level of 70% or more of available groundwater - Semi-critical blocks extract 70-90% - Critical blocks extract 90-100% - Over-exploited blocks extract over 100%. - Areas where groundwater is largely saline or brackish are classified as 'Saline'. Between 2017 and 2024, the number of 'Safe' blocks in India has risen steadily. The number of 'Over-exploited' blocks has also seen a decline.
