🪙✨ From Coin to Data: Digital Humanities Meets Computer Vision Numismatics—the study of coins—has long relied on careful, manual examination. But what happens when we bring AI and object detection into the field? In Rafael Cabral, Maria De Iorio, and Andrew Harris's recent open-access article, From Coin to Data: The Impact of Object Detection on Digital Numismatics, we explore how models like CLIP can identify and classify motifs on coins, from intricate Russian depictions of Saint George and the Dragon to ancient Southeast Asian coins bearing Hindu-Buddhist symbols. Insights from the paper 🔍 Large CLIP models excel at detecting complex iconography, while traditional methods work better for simple geometric motifs. ⚖️ A new statistical calibration improves reliability in low-quality datasets. 📊 Automated detection dramatically reduces time and effort in large-scale analysis, paving the way for studies of provenance, trade networks, and even forgery detection. This research highlights how digital humanities and AI can transform cultural heritage studies—making them more scalable, precise, and interdisciplinary. 📖 Read the full paper here (open access): https://lnkd.in/gssUfDkv #DigitalHumanities #AI #ComputerVision #Numismatics #CulturalHeritage

💔 Teacher Who Spent His Final Hours Grading Students In Hospital 💔 On January 14, 2024, the internet remembered a teacher who spent his final hours in the hospital grading his students’ work. Despite being unwell and knowing he was heading to the emergency room, he carried his laptop and charger to ensure his students received the attention they deserved. He finished grading—and tragically passed away the very next day. This moving story, shared by his daughter Sandra Venegas, is more than just viral news. It is a stark reminder of the unseen labor of educators, the late nights, weekends, and sacrifices that go far beyond what is captured in a 9–5 biometrics. Yet, government systems and institutions often measure teachers’ dedication through biometric attendance and rigid work hours—as if intellectual, emotional, and pedagogical labor can be confined to a fingerprint scan. True academic work does not fit neatly into time slots. It extends into evenings spent grading, weekends preparing lessons, and countless moments of mentoring beyond the classroom. This teacher’s story calls for us not only to honor the commitment of educators but also to rethink how we value and measure their labor. Respect for teachers must go beyond rhetoric, it must reflect in policy, recognition, and trust. #Education #Teachers #Dedication #Respect #Policy #Inspiration
