In Bengaluru’s HSR Layout, a remarkable story is unfolding—one that shows how local action can spark into a national model of development and sustainability. What started as a citizen-led effort by a former dentist has grown into a thriving, self-sustained neighborhood. More than just a local clean-up, this transformation is a powerful example of how urban planning can directly address the climate crisis. By focusing on sustainable waste management (95% waste segregation at source), public spaces transformation, local transport (Feeder Bus), and active citizen involvement in many other initiatives, HSR Citizen Forum (HCF)'s story demonstrates how neighborhoods can become climate-conscious, inclusive, and resilient. How HSR has turned into a Clean Mini City. A Former dentist and a software engineer gave up their professions when they could no longer live with the guilt that the trash the layout residents threw ended up in a nearby village. The citizens forum, they started a decade ago, has turned Bengaluru’s HSR Layout into a clean mini hub with better transport facilities. Their success story is a testimony to how communities can take charge and change their living experience. 📖 Read the full story: www.sustainabilitynext.in 📩 Subscribe to the SN Newsletter for more updates on green agri-tech breakthroughs: www.sustainabilitynext.in 💡 Got an agri innovation worth sharing? We are continually inspired by grassroots communities driven purely by volunteerism—groups that are creating meaningful and lasting change at the ground level. Their unwavering commitment to causes ranging from environmental sustainability and neighborhood improvement to waste segregation reflects the true spirit of giving back. By working relentlessly toward climate action and urban transformation, they exemplify the kind of impact that collective action can achieve The orverarching goal of Urban Communities for Climate Action (UCCA) Series would be to power these initiatives across India with vital funding, technology, and data resources—catalyzing transformative social, economic, and behavioral impact at a larger scale. At Urban Venture Labs, we are proud to support and collaborate with these changemakers, leveraging our resources and expertise to help amplify their efforts. #urbantransformation #Climateaction #communityinitiatives #UrbanCommunities #CommunityAction #SustainableLiving #UrbanLandscape Stuthi Vijayaraghavan Benedict Paramanand
Urban Communities for Climate Action - Are You Part of It? India’s cities grapple with extreme heat waves, flooding, water scarcity, and poor air quality. Building truly climate-resilient and liveable urban spaces has become urgent. While policy directives and large-scale infrastructure projects are vital, meaningful change often begins at the neighbourhood level. Local initiatives—driven by residents—offer a powerful, adaptive, and more sustainable approach to climate resilience and urban livability. The challenges of urban livability cannot be solved or addressed by the government alone. Neighbourhood-level action plays a critical role in plugging the gaps and accelerating local resilience. The ones that are doing it well need to be recognised and celebrated so that they can inspire more citizens to take up community voluntary service. SustainabilityNext and Urban Venture Labs are collaborating to share success stories of community-led urban climate action. A series of articles and video interviews has been scheduled in the coming weeks. The series will showcase 5 initiatives that are making a significant on-ground impact in Indian cities. It demonstrates how citizens have created a lasting, sustainable impact by partnering with municipalities. We believe there are 100 more such stories to tell. If you know about such initiatives, please email [email protected] The larger purpose of The Urban Communities for Climate Action (UCCA) Series is to offer a platform where communities can network and explore better access to funding, technology and data. This platform will accelerate and multiply the social, economic and behavioural impact of neighbourhood communities across India. Climate action needs to happen at all levels, beginning with our neighbourhoods. Watch out for more Urban Communities for Change stories produced in collaboration with the founders. The live action project "Waste to Opportunity" done with Urban Venture Labs examines how informal waste-pickers in Ahmedabad can be integrated into sustainable social enterprise models. This not only creates more livelihoods but also make social enterprises more inclusive and equipped in dealing with environmental challenges. Congratulations to Sadam Ashraf and Rafsana Yeamin (Class of 2024) on their impressive participation in events focused on decentralising waste management systems and presenting their work. It's encouraging to see Anant Fellowship developing young talent with the skills and mindset needed to tackle complex environmental challenges. Kudos to them for nurturing the next generation of leaders from diverse backgrounds in developing practical sustainability solutions. The project analyzes existing models and proposes inclusive, decentralized solutions to integrate and upskill waste-pickers for better economic opportunities. Sadam attended the EIS 3.0 Conference (Feb 19-20, 2025), organized by BML Munjal University, exploring AI and sustainable solutions for a circular economy. Rafsana participated in Smart Sustainable Cities 2025 (Mar 5-7, 2025), hosted by Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), contributing insights on sustainable development and inclusive business practices. Both virtual conferences brought together experts to discuss innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability in shaping a greener future. The team was guided by our external mentor Stuthi Vijayaraghavan, Founder, Urban Venture Labs and internal mentor Dr Ashima Sood, Associate Professor, Anant National University. This was a client-based LAP for the 2023-2024 cohort. Sadam Parray is a civil engineer from Jammu and Kashmir, India and Rafsana Yeamin is an architect from Dhaka, Bangladesh. We were at Huddle Global in Trivandrum, where our founder, Stuthi Vijayaraghavan, moderated a panel discussion on ROI across the Sustainability lifecycle. Urban Venture Labs is a venture studio for urban impact, and it was a privilege to be part of such an inspiring event. A key theme during the panel discussion was exploring how to measure ROI of sustainability. These terms go beyond just environmental sustainability—they prioritize the long-term viability of the ecosystem, ensuring equitable participation of all stakeholders united by a common goal. The conversations were both inspiring and energizing, showcasing the passion, drive, and determination of entrepreneurs committed to building sustainable social impact businesses. Suja Chandy from Zafin highlighted the commitment at the board level toward sustainability. She shared how their roadmap to achieving net zero is being co-developed with customers and partners, alongside their global efforts to promote diversity and provide platforms for women in STEM and leadership—a cause she deeply champions. Vishal Thakur, Vice President & CTO of Nasscom Foundation, emphasized his social innovation framework, calling for a synergistic approach involving samaaj, bazaar, and sarkar to address pressing social and environmental challenges. Anoop Nambiar from TCIS spoke about the disproportionate effects of climate change on developing nations and the urgent need for innovation. He also spotlighted startups in affordable, sustainable housing that TCIS has helped scale, demonstrating the potential of innovative solutions.
