☀️ Can our cities tackle rising urban heat through integrated planning and design? In the seventh #CoolTalk webinar hosted by UN Environment Programme’s Cool Coalition, experts explored strategies to embed heat resilience into everyday urban development. Joining the dialogue, Jaya Dhindaw, Executive Program Director, Sustainable Cities & Director, WRI India Ross Center, emphasized that heat must be seen as a lived, year-round challenge. “We need to move beyond siloed interventions—embedding heat adaptation within development planning by strengthening blue, green and grey infrastructure together for more resilient cities.” 👇 Catch the full discussion for insights on how we can #BeatTheHeat.

It only took 🗓️ 90 days for #Jhansi, India, to build the country’s first #NetZero️ public library. Its innovative design incorporates 100% on-site #energy generation, strategic #WaterConservation, and locally-sourced, eco-friendly materials. How did they do it? The #city used a #OneStopShop business model to manage #JhansiLibrary’s engineering, procurement and construction. The company’s use of prefabricated modules for #SustainableBuildings: 🚯 Minimized material waste ⌛ Reduced construction time & cost ✅ Ensured consistent project delivery 🏗️ Allowed for rapid scaling across multiple building typologies Our #experts found that similarly innovative business models lower market entry barriers for #developers and #households, create #GreenJobs and help move 🌱 #NZCRBs (net-zero carbon and resilient buildings) from isolated pilots to market scale. ⛹ 🛝 🚸 The #NurturingNeighborhoods initiative, led by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in collaboration with Van Leer Foundation and WRI India, aims to enhance the #health and #wellbeing of infants, toddlers and their caregivers in cities. The program that started with 60 cities in the application phase continues to work with 9 deepdive cities in the current phase to mainstream the young children and caregiver centric lens in urban development and create thriving environments for families. The program has spurred cities to implement and scale solutions by adopting context specific strategies towards transforming early childhood development centres and parks and open spaces into family-friendly environments. 👇 For more see below

At the e-Mobility Week in #Africa, the Global South Policymakers’ Exchange convened government representatives from India, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa to discuss how supply-side regulations (SSRs) are shaping the electric mobility transition across the Global South. The discussion reaffirmed that when tailored to local contexts and anchored in political will, supply-side regulations can unlock markets, drive innovation, and accelerate a just and inclusive e-mobility transition across the Global South. #EVMatters #ElectricMobility

Absolutely energized to be at Africa eMobility Week 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia! ⚡ The conversations here are moving decisively to pilots at scale backed with strong policy measures: with countries now implementing/ exploring fuel efficiency norms, import restrictions on ICE vehicles, and cohesive national e-mobility strategies that can unlock investment and deliver cleaner transportation. What’s exciting are the efforts to explore toward a harmonized, pan-African e-mobility framework: aligning on an ICE phase-out pathway, standardization of technology and safety norms, demand aggregation for vehicles and charging, and robust battery circularity to strengthen local value chains. This spirit of coordination, grounded in readiness benchmarking, interoperable infrastructure, and de-risked finance can fast-track adoption across 2/3-wheelers, buses, and freight, while reducing fuel import dependence and improving air quality across the continent. Africa’s e-mobility transition now rests on sustained policy convergence and regional collaboration - the real enablers of scale for the continent #AfricaeMobilityWeek2025 #ElectricMobility #CleanTransport #SustainableCities #EVTransition
