In the Era of AI, Trust is the True KPI. A brand without trust is just noise with a budget. I recently came across a beautifully written editorial by creative legend Prasoon Joshi on AI and creativity. He highlighted speed, polish, and efficiency as AI’s biggest strengths. But he also raised some very pertinent questions: Can efficiency alone earn trust? Can AI imagine the unsaid, the unknown, the unexpressed? AI is brilliant at recombining what already exists: our words, our images, our histories. What it cannot do is take the leap that defines human creativity: that instinctive, unexpected break in pattern. That’s where imagination lives and creativity thrives. This matters for business. AI-driven nudges can influence behaviour. But if they cross the line into manipulation, it is not just reputation that suffers; it is trust. And trust is what creates long-term equity. In healthcare and pharma, this is even more critical. A therapy discovered by AI is meaningful only when HCPs and patients trust the process behind it. Data integrity, ethics, and transparency become the true differentiators. The takeaway for leaders is simple: * Use AI for efficiency * Use human creativity and ethics for meaning * Make trust your real KPI * Build responsible technology and governance as your differentiator Because lasting impact is not about precision alone. Talent cannot be boxed in a grid! Grids limit possibilities and the opportunity to explore the unknowns. The 9-box grid was designed for talent. But somewhere along the way, talent started being designed for the 9-box and within the 9 box. At ETHRWorld Kochi, I challenged us to revisit the 9 box framework of talent management because talent doesn’t arrive in neat lines and boxes. It arrives like monsoon rain — sudden, uneven, life-giving. It grows like a rainforest — tangled, interwoven, quietly fierce. It moves like the ocean — shifting, deep, uncharted. It sings like a raga — with pauses, improvisations, and notes no chart can hold. Yet we keep measuring it in 9 squares. As if potential were a spreadsheet. As if growth obeyed geometry. But here’s what I’ve seen: The sapling marked “low potential” becomes the tree that shelters many. The star performer burns out when boxed too tight. And the quiet ones — the ones we overlook — often hold the rhythm of the whole team. So I ask: Why garden with grids when we could grow forests? Why chart waves when we could ride them? Why count notes when we could compose symphonies? The future of work won’t be built by classification. It will be built by cultivation. By leaders who don’t just manage talent — they believe in it. From Garage to Global Impact: The Inspiring Journey of Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Born in Bengaluru to Gujarati parents in a middle-class family, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw dreamed of becoming a doctor. In her early twenties around 1973, despite her merit, she couldn’t secure a medical scholarship. Instead, she studied Zoology at Bangalore University and applied for overseas medical programs, but without success. Her father, Rasendra Mazumdar, head brewmaster at United Breweries, suggested studying fermentation science in Australia—an unconventional path, as such courses were barely known in India, and brewmaster roles were deemed unsuitable for women. Kiran embraced the challenge. She enrolled at Ballarat College, Melbourne University, the only female in her class, earning a master’s in malting and brewing in 1975. After gaining experience in Australian breweries, she returned to India but faced rejections for brewmaster positions, with many dismissing it as “a man’s job.” With few fermentation opportunities, she considered returning to Australia. Kiran often credits her “foolish courage” or stubborn bravery for her success. Why work under someone tasting beers? She decided to pivot her expertise toward biopharma for affordable medicines and other products. In 1978, she founded Biocon in the garage of her rented home with just Rs. 10,000 in seed capital. Starting with enzyme extraction—like papain from papaya, used to tenderize meat she exported to the US and Europe. Challenges piled up: as a young woman in an unknown field, funding was tough until a chance meeting with a bank manager at a social event led to a loan. Hiring experts was hard—who wanted to join a garage startup, especially men? Add unreliable electricity, poor water quality, and lab equipment issues. Yet, she persisted. Within the first year, Biocon exported successfully, and she acquired land for expansion. Later, drawing inspiration from mentors like Infosys’ N.R. Narayana Murthy, Biocon went public in 2004 during India’s IPO boom. The company grew into a biopharma giant, with subsidiaries and innovative products. Today, at 72, Kiran’s net worth is around $3.6 billion. But her story isn’t just about business triumph—it’s her “compassionate capitalism” that stands out. She dislikes terms like “generosity” or “philanthropy,” viewing her efforts as sustainable investments in society. Through the Biocon Foundation and Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation she’s poured resources into healthcare, education, and infrastructure in Karnataka. A highlight: the 1,400-bed Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Centre in Bengaluru, making advanced care accessible and affordable. Fermentation? Rethinking Doctor-Patient Interactions in #India: Lessons from Abroad The doctor-patient relationship is the cornerstone of #healthcare, yet in India, it often feels like a vastly different experience compared to what we see overseas. Having experienced both, I’ve often pondered why these discrepancies exist and what we can learn to enhance our healthcare journey. The Indian Healthcare Journey: A Closer Look   1. The Follow-Up Void: In India, patient follow-ups are surprisingly rare. Once you leave the clinic, you're often on your own, lacking continued guidance. 2. The Missing #Pharmacist as an Ally: Unlike many Western countries where pharmacists play a vital role as continuing advisors, this essential layer of support is largely absent in India. Patients are often left feeling truly abandoned once they have their #medication. 3. The Waiting Game: Who hasn't spent an inordinate amount of time waiting in a doctor's clinic? Why can't we streamline appointments for a more respectful use of everyone's time? This applies to both patients and doctors. 4. Perfunctory #Examinations & Lack of #Transparency: There's a perception that examinations can be brief and superficial. More critically, detailed written reports of findings and observations are rarely provided. When they are, they’re often in handwriting that even a seasoned cryptographer would struggle with! This creates significant hurdles for chemists trying to dispense the right medicine. In Western countries, doctors are often diligently recording notes on computers, summarising discussions, and providing clear recommendations and follow-up actions. Empowering #patients with a better understanding of their condition & treatment plan. The "why" behind findings and recommendations is also explained, fostering #trust and clarity. 1. To get more time from your doctor: A #solution is to take back-to-back appointment as double appointment. This gives extra time for meaningful dialogue or a thorough consultation. 2. Seek Second Opinions: For various reasons, seeking second or third opinion is not as common, which can limit comprehensive care. 3. Pharmacy Predicaments: Even if we manage to decipher the doctor’s handwriting, challenges don't end there. Anecdotally, many of us have received a different brand of medicine than prescribed, even if the chemical composition is the same. This practice, often driven by higher margins for the pharmacy, raises concerns about quality and patient choice, and directly impacts pharmaceutical companies whose products are substituted. Consider this striking statistic: In Western hospitals, over 15% of occupied beds are filled by patients admitted due to incorrect prescriptions, improper administration, or medication malfunctions.
