It establishes a National Deepfake Mitigation and Digital Authenticity Task Force to evaluate and recommend regulatory and technological responses. The Act empowers authorities to penalize misuse of AI-generated impersonation that harms individuals or national interests. It provides a legal structure where deepfakes can be tracked, controlled, and prosecuted, ensuring consent, transparency, and digital integrity. The Artificial Intelligence (Protection of Rights of Employees) Bill, 2023 - The Bill aims to safeguard employee rights amid increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in workplaces. It mandates transparency, fairness, accountability, and consent in AI deployment by employers and requires the government to oversee impact assessments and compliance. The Act also mandates protections against algorithmic bias and upholds data privacy in line with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The Authority, headquartered in New Delhi, will oversee AI’s ethical, transparent, and safe deployment. It will develop policies, enforce guidelines, and address risks like deepfakes, privacy violations, and job displacement. Empowered with civil court powers, the Authority will also handle grievances and guide government policy on AI. But has that resulted in greater benefits for Indian consumers? For instance, in the WhatsApp privacy case the Competition Commission Of India noted that WhatsApp offers its consumers greater privacy protections in the EU than in India. As AI companies fight it out for control over Indian consumers, can competition enforcement ensure consumers really reap the benefits of this? Sam Altman acknowledged the importance of India as a market but not as a source of competition or of disruptive innovation. As the CCI prepares to release the market study on AI and competition, I hope that we can get a real picture of how AI is impacting markets in India stripped, from rhetoric and exaggerated accounts of the potential and weaknesses of AI. 🤖 Privacy today isn’t a policy—it’s a design choice. At the ET CISO Annual Conclave 2025, this powerful panel explored the hardest question of our AI era: how do we govern algorithms, protect privacy, and preserve human trust? From India’s DPDP Act to EU frameworks, the discussion showed that CISOs and DPOs are now tasked with more than compliance—they are responsible for data ethics, transparency, and safeguarding human dignity in a machine age. Key takeaways from the discussion: AI must be governed, not just adopted: frameworks from IEEE, NIST, and EU standards are critical, but must be tailored for geography and business context. Privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) and data minimization are becoming essential to reduce risk without reducing value.
